Mr. Niemann used a saying made famous by “The Office” to crack me up earlier this week. Plus, it made me wonder some things. What exactly did “she” say? And is there a “he” that says stuff? And who are these people? And where do “they” currently reside?

So, I figured “I” would do some analysis…

“One, two, three and to the four. Snoop Doggy Dogg and Dr. Dre is at the door.” THAT’S WHAT HE SAID. He DID…Snoop and Dr. Dre that is.

At 45-years-old, Dr. Dre still has a presence. He is just freakin cool. Seriously. Some people have that smooth “it” factor. Dr. Dre is one of those people. He has been rappin’ since I can remember and could even make health nuts want to buy more Dr. Pepper. If it can make me spin some sweet tunes, I will take what the Dr. is prescribing. “Slower is better. Trust me. I’m a Dr.”

“I love the Batman Building.” THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID. And by “she,” I mean me. It’s just awesome and 100% Nashville. Why do we call it the “Batman Building” and not the AT&T Building? This is why…

“She’s in on it.” THAT’S WHAT HE SAID (My friend Andy). Andy then sent me the SNL skit about the Shake Weight. That had my laughing until I was in tears. OF COURSE, she’s in on it.

“It was all that Dan Marino’s fault. Everyone knows that. If he had held the ball laces out, like he was supposed to, Ray would never have missed that kick. Dan Marino should die of gonorrhea and rot in Hell. Would you like a cookie son?” THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID. Mrs. Finkle in Ace Ventura…not me.

“A good boy always does what his mother asks him to do.” THAT’S WHAT HE SAID (Dear, sweet Harry T. Burn). Who is Harry? Let me explain why I heart this guy.

This past week (August 18, 1920) marked 90 years since women were granted the right to vote in America. It was a hard-fought battle to earn this right and (interestingly enough) was decided right here in Nashville, TN.

To become law, the 19th Amendment needed the support of 36 states and 35 were in favor when the vote reached Tennessee. Young (24-years-old) Harry T. Burn wasn’t going to vote for the Amendment…until his Mother asked him to do so. He broke a 48-48 tie vote and the lives of women from that point forward were changed for the better. So, thank you Harry. I am SOOOO glad that’s what you said. In fact, ALL of us women are glad that’s what you said.  ;-)

“Personally, I like the extra body heat. You know I’m always cold!” THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID. “I’m a lap sitter, which doesn’t sit well at all with my little wife.” THAT’S WHAT HE SAID. Then… “I would wager that couples who sit side-by-side also feed each other too.” THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID. Then…”Yes.” THAT’S WHAT HE SAID. Then…”I sit next to Mike a lot since I can’t hear a thing out of my right ear and he can’t out of his left…works perfectly. You young whippersnappers!” THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID. Then…”Always sit across.” THAT’S WHAT HE SAID. Then…”There’s a whole other side! MOVE and give me some space dude!” THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID.

What stirred this heated debate on Facebook and Twitter? One simple question…”Is it cool to sit on the same side of a booth when you’re a couple?” And THAT is what they said.

“I’ll take a double McSteamy Dreamy please.” THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID…and I 100% agreed. What?! We are only one month from Grey’s Anatomy. It’s a perfectly appropriate Sunday Night Facebook Poll (McDreamy vs. McSteamy). *sigh*

“People are like dirt. They can either nourish you and help you grow as a person or they can stunt your growth and make you wilt and die.” THAT’S WHAT HE SAID (Thanks Plato).

“Quit effin stealing music and movies!” THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID. And by she, I mean me. Sorry. I had to get that out after seeing a really ridiculous argument for why stealing is okay this past week. It’s one thing to download illegally. It’s another thing to justify it with that wonderful reason…”Everybody’s doing it.” WTF?! All right. All right. I’ll take a deep breath.

“There are no such things as limits to growth, because there are no limits to the human capacity for intelligence, imagination and wonder.” THAT’S WHAT HE SAID. “He” would be Ronald Reagan.

We can grow in so many amazing ways. You can even find growth in a little box. Right Brit…

I am constantly in awe of what I learn from people and music on a daily basis. Wanna know what I learned this week in the way of music? Ready or not…

1. “Someday” by Mariah Carey. “The one you gave away will be the only one you’re wishing for. Someday. Hey. Hey.” At least THAT’S WHAT MARIAH SAID.

2. “You Don’t Love Me Anymore” by Tim McGraw. “And how far we’ll travel for a place to heal our hearts. We watched it unravel so why’s tonight the hardest part?” THAT’S WHAT TIM SAID.

3. “The Beauty of Who You Are” by Marc Broussard. “There’s a silent conversation filled with hidden revelations in your eyes. Baby, I’m so into you. Every whisper from your soul to my heart. Baby, I know it’s true. You’re a sweet little mystery sent to me from the start and that’s the beauty of who you are.” THAT’S WHAT MARC SAID. And Marc can say whatever the heck he wants.

4. “Open Your Heart” by Madonna. This is old-school Madonna kids. Listen and learn. “Open your heart to me. I hold the lock and you hold the key.” THAT’S WHAT MADONNA SAID. And Madonna is many years of awesome.

5. “Why Wait” by Rascal Flatts. Oh it reminds me of that first album a little bit. YEAH! It’s fun, fun, harmonious fun! “Why wait another minute for something we should have done yesterday? I know a little church with a preacher who can hook us up right way. Love don’t need a reason. Baby I don’t see how I could love you anymore then I do today. So why wait?” THAT’S WHAT RASCAL FLATTS SAID. And more importantly, THAT’S WHAT NEIL THRASHER (and co-writers) SAID.

6. “What If You Stay” by Chuck Wicks. I am still trying to figure out why the label didn’t release this as a single. It is overwhelming and catchy and relatable and meaningful. It combines everything this artist says he was raised on…country and pop and rock. Listen to it. Tell me what you think. “What if I told you I’d change? Would you still walk away. What if I told you I love you? Would you say that it’s too late? What if you could feel what I feel when I watch you slowly drift away? What if you’re wrong. What if I’m right? You could move on, but what if you stay?” THAT’S WHAT CHUCK SAID.

7. “Undo It” by Carrie Underwood. This one is my favorite on her latest album. Come on ladies! We’ve all be there. “You stole my happy. You made me cry. Took the lonely and took me for a ride. And I wanna uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-undo it. You had my heart. Now I want it back. I’m starting to see everything you lack. Boy, you blew it. You put me through it. I wanna uh-uh-uh-undo it.” And THAT’S WHAT CARRIE SAID.

8. “Little Rock” by Collin Raye. One of my favorite songs ever written for it’s ability to haunt. Those mistakes that we all make are hard to deal with and even more difficult to correct. This song takes you down a very, specific path. “I think I’m on a roll here in Little Rock. I’m solid as a stone, baby wait and see. I’ve got just one, small problem here in Little Rock. Without you, Baby I’m not me.” THAT’S WHAT COLLIN SAID.

9. “I Told You So” by Keith Urban. This is just a cool, freakin way to say you are right. The rhythms are sweet and the song welcomes back the lost lover with arms open. “Well oh. Can’t you see that for worse or for better, we’re better together? Please. Just come back home. No, don’t say that you’re sorry and I won’t say I told you so.” THAT’S WHAT KEITH SAID.

10. “Summer of ‘69″ by Bryan Adams. This one always throws me directly back to childhood and puts a smile on my face. How can you not adore the meaning? “I got my first real six string. Bought it at the five-and-dime. Played it ’til my fingers bled. It was the Summer of ‘69.” THAT’S WHAT BRYAN SAID.

11. “Keep in Mind” by Locash Cowboys. Without a doubt, in the past two years there has not been a song I’ve been MORE excited to hear on the radio then this one. It’s just been sitting there ready for y’all to enjoy. The fiddle…the piano…the harmony…the meaning…the power ballad…the songwriter. It’s kind of amazing. Do me one favor. Give it a chance by clicking on the link. I would appreciate it. “I know those dreams you’re trying to chase. You want them now, but they won’t wait. Last thing you’re thinking about is slowing it down and the ones you left behind. I’m always thinking of you, cause when somebody loves you that’s what they do all of the time. So keep in mind.” THAT’S WHAT THE BOYS SAID.

A while back, I got challenged (and you know how much I hate that). There was a difference of opinion on how we mark historical events. Because I’m not the best with dates, places and times, I got called out. HOLD ON! I explained that if given a song from the same time of the significant historical event, I would be able to place it.

It’s not just personal events to which songs are attached. Tell me where THIS song takes you…or THIS song…or how about THIS one? They take you to a year…a month…a day…a moment. Once again, music matters.

Do you know who else helped with the music and history lesson? Last Wednesday, I was able to hear one of my very favorite songwriters in town. His name is D. Vincent Williams and he also happens to be an incredible singer.

As for that history lesson…D. Vincent helped out with the lyrics to a Kenny Rogers cut he had called “The Last 10 Years.” It was written right after we lost Christopher Reeve and captures so much about the world we live in and how it is so quickly changing. “Well, the last 10 years, look at the hills we’ve climbed. The best golfer’s black, the best rapper’s white and it’s about damn time. But we best beware, there’s a brand, new fight you see. And I hate to say, we might be our own worst enemy. We watched Oklahoma sifting through the damage. And we watched a US President get caught. We watched shareholders watch their savings vanish. We all cried when we watched those towers fall. We lost Minnie Pearl, Ron Reagan and Sam I Am. We even lost Superman.”

It’s difficult to explain the D. Vincent Williams experience because it’s so cool. A listener immediately feels welcome and part of the entire show. D. Vincent is so overwhelmingly humble, it’s hard to believe…but you do.

He has a way of spinning words into feelings and bringing you into the stories of the tunes he sings. If you want comparisons, how about comparing the stages of your life to the stages you have and will sing upon. That is what he does in the tune “Stages.”

Most recently, you have probably heard D. Vincent’s song “Just Got Started Lovin’ You” by James Otto. It was a big hit for James and I have a whole lot of fun hearing D. Vincent put his soulful spin on the tune. It is obvious the song is owned by Mr. Williams.

Every time I’ve heard him play, D. Vincent leaves himself wide open to express where these tunes originated. No story is more touching then the one that goes with the Rascal Flatts song “I’m Movin’ On.” I’ve heard the explanation about how it was difficult to get this song even published…and then cut…and then placed on an album…and then released as a single. However, the strength of the song and the perseverance of it’s writers, singers and producers got the job done.

That night I was able to hear where the song came from…and I mean where in the heart and soul it originated. You see D. Vincent had never met his co-writer Phillip White until the day they wrote “I’m Movin’ On” together. D. Vincent said it had been such a rough time in his life, he would have cancelled the writing appointment with Phillip…if he could have found his phone number to do so. Instead, the songwriter walked into the room and was immediately asked by Phillip what was wrong. That is when D. Vincent broke down in tears…in front of a total stranger.

The two men sat and talked about everything that was going on and decided not to write anything that day…until D. Vincent started playing some notes on the piano. Phillip asked what he was playing and when D. Vincent began to sing (what is now the second verse of I’m Movin’ On), Phillip’s eyes lit up. Within minutes, a poem Phillip has written years prior became the first verse and the rest (as they say) is history.

You hear me rave about songs often. However, there are two song in the history of my life that have actually moved me to action…this is one of those tunes. As I sat listening to D. Vincent beautifully deliver the lyrics, I had to look at the ceiling to avoid the waterfall of tears from falling. Incredible song…amazing night…unmatched artist. Thank you D. Vincent. I owe ya one…or a million.

“I’m movin’ on. At last I can see, life has been patiently waiting for me. And I know there’s no guarantees, but I’m not alone. There comes a time in everyone’s life when all you can see are the years passin’ by and I have made up my mind that those days are gone.”

Have I mentioned Randy Houser before today? This guy is certainly not a conformist and that is precisely what I love about him and his music. It was time for me to break out of the comfort zone of Nashville to see how folks outside of the city limits react to one of my favorite up-and-coming artists.

SOOOO…to Louisville I went. And this is what the crowd looked like…

They kind of loved them some Randy Houser…and I was overjoyed to see it. This crowd was singing back to him on all the songs played over the radio airwaves like “Anything Goes,” “Whistlin’ Dixie” and “Boots On.”

You can also tell that Randy has a good time entertaining crowds. It is obvious that is the reason he is playing music. I even got to enjoy one of my favorites in the form of “My Kind of Country.”

Here is why Randy is far from a conformist. You are about to hear songs from the second album which will be released on September 21st. The first single is called “A Man Like Me,” so be listening for it. This album will be unexpected if all you know of Randy is the first album. The songs are all great, but he’s goin old-school on you for album number two.

Every song has an old country undertone and Randy’s voice suits that style. If you are a fan of the greats, you are gonna love it. He calls upon the influence of his music idols on many of the tunes. I’m gonna be honest. Friday night, I had fun hearing the difference. AND I had an even better time watching the crowd react to music they had never heard until that night. THAT is always the true test.

I can’t wait to see what happens for Randy in the near future. He is hands down one of the most talented artists in town and I am never disappointed at a live show.

It was also great to meet Lauren and Vanessa…

As well as convince Kristen to “Rock On Together” with me this week…

We were trying to rock Louisville’s face off. Who knows if it worked. I do know Randy was successful in winning over the Kentucky public at 4th Avenue Live.

So out of my comfort zone I went on Saturday. Where? To Woodstock of course. It was a really cool place, but I have to be honest. I thought there would be a lot more hippies, recreational drug use and free love.

Woodstock was a beautiful little Georgia town though. Yes, Woodstock, Georgia. Where did you think I meant?!

There was a cute little gazebo that served as a stage for the musicians who played that night.

The people were really sweet and quick to offer up any help or information we needed. Probably because in a town that small…they know when strangers are among them…

At least we weren’t driving this Pac-Man car (even though I REALLY wanted to) or we would have stuck out like a sore thumb…

Chuck Wicks put on a great show for the crowd and everyone had a great time! I told you about Chuck’s show last review and it was just as good this time. However, like Randy, it was nice to see Chuck perform outside of the confines of Nashville. There seems to be more of a lighthearted, no-pressure feel in other places. I can completely understand that concept.

All-in-all, the week was fantastic and I am ready for the awesomeness that will begin in approximately 17 hours and continue through Sunday evening. Oh yeah. It’s on!

Make sure when you buy a Dora the Explorer pinata, that the head also breaks open. Otherwise, you could really scare some children when Dora is just hanging there by a rope. I mean Megan had to take the place of Dora’s smashed candy-filled body as to not terrify the children.

SURPRISE APPEARANCES BY ACTORS:

While channel surfing the other night, I paused. Is that Ray Liotta on “Hannah Montana”?!! No. Way. I couldn’t even go see “Unlawful Entry” back in the day because the TRAILER gave me nightmares. That dude was scary! Now he’s on Hannah Montana?! That’s like putting Bruce Willis in High School Musical. I don’t think John McClane’s catch phrase would sound as cool in musical form. Told ya.

However, I actually sat there and watched 10 minutes of the show in utter amazement…and Ray was funny. Still…scary.

PLAN TO LAUGH AT REALITY SHOW LEGAL LANGUAGE:

While signing a friend up for “The Bachelorette” recently, I cracked up at the rules. These rules and regulations for the show actually include a definition of the word “single” (for those who are confused). Can we distribute that definition to people around the country? I think it might come in handy. Just sayin’…

SURPRISE DECORATIONS IN BARS:

What does it look like the little figures on this drum are doing?

We conducted a completely unscientific survey at this local Nashville bar (Name that bar) because it was so amusing.

It ended up somewhere between the “Jump On It” dance or the “Ride the Donkey” (via The 69 Boyz) dance. Please. Please. Don’t act like you don’t know about what I am speaking. Will and Carlton do.

P.S. After that video finished playing, THIS happened. Overwhelming shame washed over my generation for this tune. Good thing I NEVER listened it. “Boom. Boom. Acka. Lacka. Lacka. Boom…”

PLAN TO BE ARTISTICALLY HUMORED, IMPRESSED AND EDUCATED:

In the humorous category…check out the Lady Antebellum spoof (a.k.a. “Lady Haze”) of Lee Brice’s song “Love Like Crazy.” They aptly renamed the tune “Biscuits and Gravy.” I was crying tears of laughter the first time I heard it. Can’t wait for their next “Lady Haze.”

Next up is the video for Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie.” This one is already conjuring up controversy for the subject matter. It’s not a big secret that Eminem tends to welcome a little controversy. However, this video was done really, really well.

This is not meant to glorify domestic violence in ANY WAY. It is written and sang in a first person account from both sides of the story. It’s not justifying abuse. It’s explaining the mindset of both people who are trapped in the domestic violence cycle. Both Eminem and Rihanna have experience with the topic. I can only assume that this is their way of explaining.

Let it be said that there is NOTHING okay or right about domestic violence. It is NEVER justified. It is NEVER the fault of the person being abused. There is NEVER a good reason to stay. There is ALWAYS help a phone call away.

Megan Fox stars in the video and donated all of proceeds for her work to a local shelter for abused women. Megan…RESPECT.

SURPRISE DISCOVERIES:

Speaking of Eminem…In a recent SPIN Magazine article, Eminem talks about not being up-to-date internet usage. The rapper purposely stays off of Twitter and Facebook because he doesn’t think he would be able to handle all of the feedback from strangers on a daily basis.

“If I learn now, I’m going to be on that bitch all day looking at comments about me, and it’s going to drive me crazy.”

I don’t blame him one, little bit. Can you imagine having to read thousands of opinions and comments about you (and all the things people think are wrong with you as a person) every day?! That would be overwhelming and at time soul crushing I would imagine.

Speaking of insane…I never thought I’d find a cupcake place that could beat GiGi’s here in Nashville. Well, hello Ivey Cakes! (Yeah. Yeah. I just realized the logo is upside down, but you get the picture.)

On the medical front of surprise discoveries…

A study in Japan says making out helps diminish allergies. So…no shots? No doctor visits? No medicine? All we have to do is make out with a hot man to be cured?! Thank you Japan.

PLAN TO SEE A NEW MOVIE OR RE-WATCH AN OLD ONE:

After much raving from friends and family, I decided to see the movie “Inception.” Holy awesomeness Batman! That thing had me focused and thinking from the moment it started. At times, I was confused. At times, I was relieved. At times, I was distraught. At times, I was on the edge of my seat.

However, I was at full attention…all of the time. See it. Leo did his best acting job…maybe ever. It’s just an incredible movie on all fronts.

AAAAANNNNND…Major League was on TV this weekend. This made me very happy. I have hearted that flick since I was a kid. “Hello. Do you know us? We’re a major league baseball team…”

If nothing else, I learned… 1) Specific songs can make you pitch fast and accurate; 2) Mind games can help you win your division and 3) Never mess with Jobu’s rum

DON’T BE SURPRISED IF YOU HAVE A GREAT TIME AT THE LOCAL FAIR:

I’ve been to fairs all over the country and they are always a good time. Those things are built for fun! I mean, you have rides like this…

You can lose a quick $2 at one of those booths with games that look pretty simple to win. How did I miss two shots in a basket one foot away?! I blame it on the heels.

There are extremely interesting vegetables like this eggplant that won for “Most Unique Shape.” Ummm….yeah.

I learned about gardening and Brit learned about good ham.

Just because I’m from Kansas, doesn’t mean I know a whole lot about farming. However, it’s important to learn…that I should never attempt to grow things, because I’ll kill them (on accident!). RIP…Christmas poinsettia.

PLUS, I can find a K-Stater anywhere. At the Williamson County Fair, it was Charlie from the Kansas State Wildcats Class of 1965. WHOOOP! WHOOOP! It was a pleasure my friend.

PLAN TO WATCH COLLEGE GAMEDAY (SPECIFICALLY CHRIS FOWLER):

I have loved Chris, Lee and Kirk since this day back in 1998. These guys are fun, smart, sarcastic and knowledgable about the topics they discuss. They are everything commentators should be and they have made my fall Saturday mornings better every, single year.

Desmond Howard joined the crew in 2008 and this year Erin Andrews brings her sports knowledge to the table starting with the additional first hour of the show beginning at 9am Eastern/8am Central on September 4th.

IT’S NOT A SURPRISE…IT’S ABOUT TIME:

This is the section for congratulations. There are four people who I would like to congratulate for being so awesome at what they do and recently being recognized for those talents.

1. Congrats to Trevor Rosen for signing a publishing deal with Black Ink Music. He is one of the best songwriters in town people! Yeah, I said it.

2. Congrats to Lee Brice for scoring his first Top 5 song on the Country charts with “Love Like Crazy.” It’s a great tune and Lee’s an amazing artist.

3. Congrats to Jerrod Niemann for his first #1! That’s right #1 y’all with the song “Lover, Lover.” It’s like butter. Can’t wait for you to fall in love with the next single, “What Do You Want.”

4. Finally, congrats to Billy Dawson for winning the MDA/Clear Channel “Get Discovered” National competition. Billy is one of four winners who will perform on the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon over Labor Day Weekend. The winning entry was Billy’s song “She Makes Me.” He’s an amazing artist with a huge heart and it’s a wonderful event. Tune in y’all!

PLAN ON A VARIETY OF SONGS:

By now you understand that the songs on the song of the week list are going to come from everywhere. They find me throughout the week. I don’t find them. Shall we?

1. “Always On My Mind” by Michael Buble. He does an absolute beautiful job with this tune, because Michael is SMOOOOOTH. The song was made famous by Elvis (Okay, okay. Willie Nelson too). You know how much I hate anyone to cover an Elvis song, but Michael is the man on this one.

2. “Good Life” by OneRepublic. Love the band and I heart the feel good tune. It’s one of the few songs on the second album that sound like the band I fell in love with a few years back. It just makes you feel good.

3. “Doesn’t Anyone Hurt Anymore” by Travis Tritt. It was 2002. That was THE BEST live show I have ever seen. This one took place in the CMT Studios and it was for a new series CMT was starting called “CMT: Crossroads.” Who was Travis singing with you ask? Ray Charles. Ray. Freakin’. Charles. There are no words for that experience. I can never duplicate it and writing words to describe it will never give it justice. Let me just say this song has a special place in my heart…as do Travis Tritt and Ray Charles.

4. “Believe In You” by Amanda Marshall. “Somewhere someone’s reaching. Trying to grab that ring. And somewhere there’s a silent voice learning how to sing. And some of us can’t move ahead. We’re paralyzed with fear. And everybody’s listening, cause we all need to hear I believe in you. I can’t even count the ways that I believe in you. And all I want to do is help you to believe in you.” Enough said.

5. “Thinking Over” by Dana Glover. It’s such a great tune about making one of the most (if not THE most) important decisions of your life. “And I can’t really tell you what I’m gonna do. Cause there are so many thoughts in my head. There are two roads to walk down and one road to choose. So I’m thinking over the things that you said.”

6. “It’s My Life” by Bon Jovi. This song may have single-handedly got me through every workout session I ever did in college. How can you not love this tune? The band even references characters from songs recorded 20 years ago. That. Is. Awesome. “This is for ones who stood their ground. For Tommy and Gina who never backed down.” This is an anthem needed at numerous points in life. “I aint gonna be just a face in the crowd. Gonna hear my voice when I shout it out loud. It’s my life. It’s now or never. I aint gonna live forever. I just wanna live while I’m alive. It’s my life. The heart is like an open highway. Like Frank S said, I did it my way. I just wanna live while I’m alive, cause it’s my life.” Live on y’all. Live on!

7. “Stuck Like Glue” by Sugarland. I know the feedback on this one is split right down the middle. It’s catchy and fun. Here is my argument for why I love it. Music is a feeling and Sugarland has a very, specific way of making songs truly sound like those feelings. They are not always 1,000 feet in depth. Sometimes they are tons of fun. Sometimes they are sassy. Sometimes they feel like pain. This duo has always found a way to translate. I appreciate and adore the goofy fun in this tune. It even has a wink to the reggae sound. Watch the video. Fun-NY.

8. “Crank That (Soulja Boy)” by Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em. Hey! You know you’ve danced to it. LOVE. IT. I got to see a dance party with a bunch of kids doing this dance. It was awesome. They danced circles around me.

9. “Truly” by Jared Blake. It still stands as one of my favorite love songs of all time. I am waiting for a very, smart established artist to snap this up and record it. However, I’m not sure I can hear anyone else sing it after hearing Jared sing it. He is on his way to becoming that established artist I’m talking about and I’m hoping he brings this song with him. It’s amazing. “When I found you, baby without a sound you spun my world around you and I’ll never know how. How I need you, even when I don’t want to. I say it too much you know I do. But God I truly love you.”

10. “Scream” by Chris Cornell. This tune is just too cool for words and it helps get all the stress out. Trust me on this one.

11. “Rocks in Your Shoes” by Emily West. Any time I feel like whining, this song knocks me out of the mood. It’s awesome and can actually even better the mood. “I guess you gotta make a choice when it hits the fan. You can get a little down or get a little mad. When there’s stones in the road, only one thing to do. You’ve gotta learn to walk with rocks in your shoes.”

12. “Small Town” by John Mellencamp. If you’re from a small town (even if you live in a big city now), there is no need for me to explain the sheer greatness of this tune. It is everything a song should be and always takes me home.

DON’T BE SURPRISED WITH GREAT, NEW EP RELEASES:

Rob Blackledge. You’ve heard me rave about him before both as a Featured Artist and as a reviewed artist. He is just an amazing singer/songwriter/entertainer.

A new EP titled “The Place Where Everyone Falls in Love” recently showed up at my door and I gladly listened when I saw the name on the envelope.

There are some really, cool songs on this one. It’s totally different than the Rob you’ve heard in the past. This EP cruises you all the way through summer. All you need is a beach, a towel, a boat and your swimsuit.

We start with the beat laden song “Paradise” which also happens to keep the laid back “beachy” feel. You can almost hear the ocean waves right along with the music. “And the music, it played. And the singers, they sang. And the lovers all danced the night away. I get lost in your eyes making love by the fire light. The perfect day in paradise.”

Next up is the title track, “The Place Where Everyone Falls in Love.” It describes exactly what it says. Imagine holding hands with that special someone, walking down the beach at sunset with the water drifting over your feet in the sand. That is the feel delivered by this song. “You can’t escape the sun on your face…the sound of the waves…a lover’s embrace. Cause this is the place where everyone falls in love.”

“Sailing Away” is one of two songs on the CD that has pieces of Rob music from the past…in the way of feel/sound. However, it still keeps with the relaxing summer vibe of the EP.

“Stay Right Here” is my favorite of the five tunes. It is sweet, sexy and romantic without being over the top. This song is reminiscent of his previous songs in the way of style. The guitar joins his voice like they are friends narrating a story to an enthralled audience. It is slow and easy and makes it simple for the listener to sit back and relax after a long day.

“Summer Saturday” has a vacation feel without ever leaving your house. It is the sweet plea from one lover to another. “Even if our dreams remain fantasy, I don’t mind. Just stay right here with me.”

Overall, it’s a cool departure from what you are used to from Rob. This is an EP crafted for summer fun and love and relaxation. Mission accomplished. Great job by Rob Blackledge. Check out the tunes y’all!

ANNNNNNND then there is Blake Shelton.

This is my favorite set of six songs from Blake in a while…and I’m a fan of all of his music. This grouping is just special. He takes you through the emotional gamut one 3 1/2 minute song at a time…and it’s awesome.

“That Thing We Do” – It’s the fun song. The tune takes you to a little lake in the middle of a huge field where no one but you and your baby can be found. It’s exciting and down home all at the same time. “Baby, let’s go snuggle up in my truck. Windows down. Radio up. Just you and me. Nothin between us, but jeans and with a little luck we’ll shuck them off before the night is through. And we’ll be doin’ that thing we do.” Favorite line: “I’ll tuck you into my pick up bed.”

“Suffocating” – My favorite tune on the EP. This one is written by Lady Antebellum’s Hillary Scott and Miranda Lambert. It’s one of those special songs. Heartbreak and longing is such a universal feeling. Two female writers put it into words and Blake make the words sting (in a good way). “The memory of what used to be cuts me like a thorn. Loneliness starts rolling in like thunder from the storms. My strength starts to sway. I feel the winds of change. It’s such a paralyzing place. Oh and it’s suffocating. When I think it’s dead and gone, then it starts to rain oh and it grows again. I find myself out in your driveway. My hands are frozen on the wheel and I can feel your love still. Suffocating.” Added bonus: Hillary Scott is also singing background vocals.

“Got a Little Country” – It’s a man showing his love for a sassy, country girl. “Yep! Yep!” The song is delivered fast like an auctioneer and details how a city girl can be a little country with the right man. How many songs contain Manolo Blahnik in the lyrics? It discusses shoes?! I. Am. In. “She may look like New York, Miami, L.A., but when it comes to lovin me she aint that way. She got a little country…got a little country…got a little country in her.”

“All About Tonight” – It’s the current #1 song in the country and is about embracing life as it comes at you. This is when people are only out for fun…no commitment. The title says it all. I like to call it the Gatorade anthem. “Don’t bother tellin’ me what I got comin in the mornin’. I already know. I got some feel good pills and a red Gatorade by my bed ready to go.” HAHAHAHA!

“Who Are You When I’m Not Looking” – It’s a close second on my favorite of the EP. This is the tune for a man who wants more than just to see you naked. WOW! And I mean WOW! “My, oh, my. You’re so good lookin’. Hold yourself together like a pair of bookends. But I’ve not tasted all your cookin’. Who are you when I’m not lookin’? I wanna know. I wanna know. I wanna know. Do you break things when you get mad? Eat a box of chocolates cause you’re feelin’ bad? Do you paint your toes, cause you bite your nails? Call up Mamma when all else fails?”

“Draggin the River (Featuring Miranda Lambert)” – It’s the hilarious song that Blake fans have come to know, love and expect from him. Two families who are not big fans of their relative’s significant other?! That never happens. Added bonus: Blake’s fiancee Miranda Lambert helps him out on this tune.

PLAN ON FINDING GOOD MUSIC ANYWHERE IN THE COUNTRY:

Usually, I’m also traveling around the country to hear great artists. This time, they came to me at The 5 Spot right here in Nashville.

I was technically on vacation when Chicago native Dan Tedesco and Columbus, Ohio based Andy Shaw Band played at the end of July. Therefore, I was only listening for enjoyment and not taking notes.

However, I have to mention them both, because it was an interesting change of pace and a whole lot of fun. The two represented their respective cities and states well. Give both a listen when you get a chance. Please and thank you.

SURPRISE TRIBUTES TO LEGENDS OF OUR PAST:

It has been 33 years to the day we lost the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. There are no words to describe the mark Elvis Presley left on the world of music and pop culture in general.

No one can mimic him. Few even try. This is an artist who literally CREATED an entire genre of music. Generation after generation has consumed the notes and rhythms and passion of his music.

That is why the tribute I watched this morning from Matt Ramsey and his adorable little duet partner was probably the most appropriate for this day. Check it out HERE.

Elvis’ legend lives on…RIP to the King.

PLAN TO BE ENTERTAINED:

That is what happened to me this past week at the Williamson County Fair. Aside from all the enjoyment experienced above, I also got to enjoy two wonderful performers that night.

First up was Jordyn Shellhart. I had no idea how great this 16-year-old phenom was going to be. She literally was starting her Junior year of High School the following day. So I’ll be honest. I assumed the songwriting would be filled with teenage scenarios and predictable lyrics. This was based solely on her age. I was very, very wrong.

She started with the defiant “I will get over you” tune called “You Don’t Get to Get to Me” with a chorus that says it all. “You don’t get to get to me. Don’t get to be a reason I lose sleep. Don’t get to hear I’m lost without you. Truth is I aint thought about you. All you are is a big, black cloud in my past and Baby, I’m all rained out. I’ve let you go. I’ve set you free. You don’t get to get to me.”

The voice is sweet and right on target with some bluegrass/country vocal undertones. The themes of each song contain depth and meaning. Jordyn delivers the tunes with a confidence that surpasses her age.

How would a teenager today discuss the problems in the world? She has some choice words for the adults creating such a mess in the tune “My Generation.” The economy, environment and health care are all inclusive when it comes to the response…”When it’s said and done, it all falls on my generation.”

And how might her generation help to fix things? You can find the answer in “Save the Neighborhood.” It’s about changing the world one step at a time by making a positive difference in the world around you. “Cause if you want to save the world, you’ve got to save the neighborhood.”

This is not your typical 16-year-old ladies and gentlemen. Signed to SeaGayle Music Publishing and Sony Music Nashville, it seems as though Jordyn is ready to tackle the music industry AND high school. Good luck with both Jordyn.

Next up was Chuck Wicks.

I started listening to Chuck Wicks’ music for one reason. That reason was a song on a Steve Holy album called “Lead Me On.” As a fan of the songwriters in this town, I always figure out who writes the tunes to which I attach. Mr. Wicks was a co-writer on “Lead Me On,” so I figured he had to have some great stuff on his own album. I was correct.

I have only seen Chuck live once or twice and one of those times was a short, two-song songwriter’s round. That is why I had no idea how funny this guy could be. Chuck brought out the humor on that evening. And the entertainment was awesome.

The progression of Chuck’s songs read like chapters in a book. The tunes have grown and changed and encompassed different mindsets and emotions over the past years of his career.

That night we got to hear “Stealing Cinderella” which was the first tune released to radio in 2007. The sweet, thoughtful and romantic song rightfully catapulted him into the Top 5 on the charts. There was the sweet, fun and intoxicatingly catchy “All I Ever Wanted.” That tune gets trapped in my head all day long if I hear it in the morning. And now there is the temperature rising, extremely seductive and daringly hot “Hold That Thought.”

The audience also got to hear many songs off of the upcoming album. These tunes had a whole new feel to them. The overall feel is a prefect mixture of idealism, memories, roll-with-the-punches attitude and romance.

Chuck’s favorite on the new album is a song called “Old School.” It is laid back fun that throws you back into your memory to good times with old friends. The country reggae inspired “Don’t You Wanna Ride in My Convertible” leaves a listener wanting to respond with a resounding…yes. In the tune “Worries Out the Window,” the singer coaxes the audience into chanting along with a “Hey, hey, hey…” and it is simple to find many swaying in their seats to the sound. Finally, there is “She Gets to Me” which requires movement.  It is impossible to sit still as the singer ponders whether or not he should tell a woman how he feels. “I like the way she talks to me. I like the way she walks with me. I like a girl, but she don’t know it yet.”

What I found most impressive about the singer/songwriter during this show was the comfort he displayed on stage. It was the best I have ever hear Chuck sing with vocals touching each note perfectly and in time. Many singers have an issue with the segues in between songs. This is Chuck’s strength. There is just enough explanation, just enough crowd interaction and just enough humor to keep the show moving at the perfect pace.

How many artists do you know who will cover Justin Bieber just for fun because the kid was in town playing at the arena (Told ya I’d mention Justin Bieber somewhere)? Or bust into some 80’s inspired tunes to ignite a memory in the minds of those enjoying the show (“Turn around. Every now and then…”)? Or understand that it’s okay to talk one-on-one to the crowd because the show is an experience shared by each person in attendance? Chuck Wicks gets it.

I’m glad I got the opportunity to see such a great full band show. Carry on Chuck. Carry on.

DON’T BE SURPRISED BY AN OUTPOURING OF LOVE:

On Thursday, it was off to 3rd and Lindsley to celebrate and remember a great man by the name of Gary Smith.

Many amazing artists were on hand to pay tribute to Gary and it was a joy to listen to all the feelings they had to express through music.

First up was Marcel. Do you want to know what Marcel is good at artistically? A little bit of everything. I’m not kidding. This guy is a successful songwriter (“Nothin’ to Lose” by Josh Gracin, “There’s More to Me Than You” by Jessica Andrews), director (“She Won’t Be Lonely Long” Clay Walker music video), singer (“Country Rock Star”) and did I mention he was also a professional hockey player? Yeah. It must suck to be so talented.

Marcel organized the event and I got to hear him sing some great tunes like “The Good Life.” It details why this life we live is worth every second. “The good life. No worries on my mind. Everyone I love is still alive and time goes by so fast. We live, laugh, love, die, cry. It’s all part of the good life.”

He was followed by another incredible singer/songwriter, Jessica Andrews. I have been enjoying Jessica’s music since she was 15-years-old. This is a woman who knows how to pick a song and then sings the heck out of it. I am rarely disappointed with her choices. What I cannot believe I forgot was the sheer power of her voice. Jessica can SAAAAANG. I was able to hear two tunes that I absolutely adore.

First, was the utterly soul crushing “Everything.” She vocally details lost love in such a way that even as a listener, it is difficult to breathe. “I think about you every, single day. Every second, every minute, every prayer I pray to get you back in my arms. What I’d give to have you around. Every night I lay awake, cause I can’t sleep. Midnight to morning feels like a damn week. I miss you so much I can barely breathe. You are my everything.”

Last was the tune that stands as one of my favorites of all time. Written by Brett James and Troy Verges, “Who I Am” says it all. Jessica gives it a perfect vocal lift with convincing phrase structure. (FYI…I once asked Brett James if his Grandmother was named Rosemary. She’s not.)

Trevor Rosen even got up to sing one in the form of one of the first songs he wrote after landing in Music City. It’s also one of the first songs I ever heard Trevor sing a few years back. The tune is called “One More Night With You.” Great song from a great guy.

You know fun is about to be had when Keith Anderson takes the stage. After a rousing rendition of “Pickin’ Wildflowers” and a heartfelt “I Still Miss You,” Marcel requested Keith close out his portion of the show with “Lost In This Moment.” Keith happily obliged and the crowd happily listened. Added bonus…Chad Warrix of Halfway to Hazard currently plays guitar for Mr. Anderson on the road. Since he was at this show as well, Keith and the guys joined in on harmonies for the Halfway to Hazard song “Daisy.” If you haven’t heard it, listen. DAMN IT! That is a great tune and the guys did it justice that evening. *wiping away tears*

If you are an American Idol devotee, you know all about the wonder that is Bo Bice. This guy has some SOUL in his voice and it was delivered in the form of “Different Shades of Blue.” There is a texture to the sound he delivers that is unmatched and it is perfect for this tune. “You may think that I’m lying, but I swear that it’s true. If you think hurt only comes in one color, well I’ve got news for you. I’ve seen it all in different shades of blue.”

I also adored the new single Bo sang called “You Take Yourself With You.” I think we’ve all been in that spot where we think some physical change will solve some problem. As you grow up, you learn that is SO not the case. “Time to go. There’s nothing left but leaving. When you know, you know. You just can’t fight that feeling. You can climb the highest mountain. Go where no one’s ever gone. On a crowded city sidewalk you might find yourself alone. In the middle of the desert. Anywhere the wind blows. Son, you take yourself with you wherever you go.”

This is where the WTF moment enters into play. First of all, I have to apologize to my friend Lori. She has been trying to get me to see/hear this next entertainer for a while now. It’s not that I didn’t want to hear this woman. It’s just that I have always had something planned when Shelly Fairchild was playing in the past. From this point forward, I will cancel all other plans to attend a Shelly Fairchild event.

Let me put it this way, she sang one song. One. Freakin’. Song. That’s all it took for me to become an instant fan. This woman is AMAZING!! She’s got raw soul. Every, single word MEANS something based on the way Shelly delivers the note. There are big band elements in the music as well as rock and country influences. It is impressive. Wow! I mean…Wow! Did I mention Wow?!

Here is how she introduced herself to the room. “I’m feelin’ love y’all. That’s what I feel. Every time I let go of my fear. Freedom, free from the hatred. Oh Lord, how long I’ve waited to arrive where I’ve landed in peace and understanding. One thing that time has taught me. You’ve got to love everybody.” That, my friends, is an artist. Sometimes it is vital to stop, refocus and rediscover a love and passion for life and all the parts of it you hold dear. Working too much diminishes the ability to enjoy the very thing about which you are passionate.

One month. That is the break I needed. By the end of that month…well, the song above pretty much sums it up.

All it took for me to stop was what you might call a “Wake Up Call.”

WAKE UP CALL #1: ROCKS & WINDOWS DON’T MIX

It was a literal rock through my window to get my attention. Some really, awesome person broke into my car and stole my GPS for quick money. All I can say is the cash had BETTER be for some kid’s college fund or I’m gonna be ticked! You don’t think so? Dang.

WAKE UP CALL #2: AMAZING SINGER/SONGWRITERS CAN MAKE A BAD NIGHT BETTER

The show I was attending that evening accidentally turned out to be the most expensive one I’ve seen/heard all year. However, Wendell Mobley, Jason Sellers, Jim Collins and D. Vincent Williams on the stage singing made it worth every penny.

I also have to give a shout out to Andy at The Rutledge who was amazingly awesome and used a shop vac to clean all of the glass out of my car. It would have been a very, uncomfortable ride home otherwise. Ouch!

WAKE UP CALL #3: FRIENDS MAKE LIFE ENJOYABLE. HAVE FUN!

I got a chance to catch up with so many people in my life I have missed lately. It has been so insane the past few months, I haven’t been able to spend as much time with my friends as I would have liked…and that’s no excuse! Therefore, I set out to change that.

There was a great dinner and game of Taboo. Plus, Cathie ALWAYS has the best wine.

There were long phone calls and I learned about some really, cool stuff going on in my friends’ lives. Plus, they give amazing advice. I love great conversations and people who have lots to add to those talks.

There were multiple trash talking sessions with my guy friends and I ADORE them for cracking me up and being mean in a “it’s not really mean, it’s fun” way. They always put a smile on my face.

And there was a visit from some of my college friends…Julie and Rich. We had a fun Nashville evening and remembered some great times from back in the day.

Great to see y’all! It’s so important to laugh. And I thank you for all the great times!

WAKE UP CALL #4: DANCE. DANCE. DANCE.

I’m a dancer. Can’t help it. When the music starts, I just move. However, this week I was schooled in the art of dance by a sixth grader and a second grader. Kaitlyn and Emma know how to get their dance on and I learned from them.

Matt Ramsey provided the music at the Wildhorse Saloon and the girls provided the dance lessons. Good times were had by all.

WAKE UP CALL #5: FAMILY MATTERS…MOST.

Dear, sweet Jerrod…congrats! Oh yeah…and RESPECT!

THEN there were quite a few great men. There was the sweet guy who actually respected Ali as a person, made her laugh and took the breakup really, really well. He earned her respect by being strong in who he is as an individual. There was the guy who had a great sense of humor and also cared for and respected the woman he was dating. Plus, he knew it was more manly to be open about his feelings then to hide them no matter what the outcome. And there was the man she chose in the end who was all of the above to Ali. Gee, that sounds NOTHING like real life.

WAKE UP CALL #8: EVEN SOME WISE MEN CAN GET US WRONG

One of my very, favorite speakers said something a few months ago that stuck with me. He said, “Women need to be told they look good, while men need to be told they did a good job.”

This one made me shake my head. OF COURSE we like to be told we look good. However, do you know how much more important it is to be told we are WORTH something and respected? That would fall into the “did a good job” category. Guys, don’t ever underestimate that need in women as well. It matters.

I have a feeling that men like to be told they look good every once in a while as well. Ladies and Gentlemen, please correct me if I’m wrong.

WAKE UP CALL #9: DON’T IGNORE RANDOM THOUGHTS. EMBRACE THEM.

Things go through your head during the course of a day. Fully explore all of the randomness. It can assist others in the future.

• The spinach artichoke dip at Whiskey Kitchen in Nashville is AMAZING!
• Jack-in-the-Box hamburgers are as big as I am…but gooooooood.
• OMG! I beat BrickBreaker on my BlackBerry!!!!! It was uneventful. Well, that’s lame.
• Homemade ice cream. Incredible. The end.
• Ummm…a lot of my random thoughts are about food.

WAKE UP CALL #10: CULTURE CAN BE COOL

I’m not a big visual arts person. However, open a “Golden age of Couture” exhibit at the Frist and I. Am. There. Clothes and shoes from great designers of the past?! SCORE! It was amazing. I urge you all to go.

Reading is so much fun and I don’t get to do it much anymore. The break allowed me to take some suggestions from friends and family on books I should be reading. The first suggestion I got was from my friend Denise. She suggested I read the Eminem biography (she knows I’m a fan) called “The Way I Am.” She told me I wouldn’t regret it. I didn’t. It was a quick read and an extremely insightful look into the mind of one of the greatest rappers/artists of our time.

The second suggestion came from my little sis Tara. Apparently, she thought I would appreciate the sarcasm of author Laurie Notaro in the book “We Thought You’d Be Prettier.” Apparently, she was correct. I’m not all the way through it yet, but so far…SO hilarious.

The Cosby Show taught me more about art, literature and music than I ever could have imagined. While watching one particular rerun a few weeks ago, I was reminded of the first time I learned some of the works of Shakespeare. My attitude reflected that of Cockroach and Theo. WAKE UP CALL #11: PEOPLE ARE INTERESTING…IF YOU LISTEN

While on a flight from Kansas City to Nashville, I had the pleasure of sitting next to two awesome individuals. The man sitting beside me introduced himself as Jimmy Wilkerson and it was quickly discovered that he was a former Oklahoma Sooner and now plays for the New Orleans Saints. After I got over the initial uneasiness of his Sooner background, I found out the guy was pretty cool. It’s all in good fun Jimmy! Toni (who’s last name I will not even attempt to spell for fear of incredible failure) is a professor at a Florida college who jumped right into the conversation and had me cracking up! It might have been the most fun I’ve ever had on that short flight. Thanks y’all! Toni, good luck with the wedding (and that hyphenated name) and Jimmy, good luck kicking some ass on the football field in New Orleans. “Who Dat?!”

WAKE UP CALL #12: GREAT MUSIC SURROUNDS US

This month, I didn’t go to many shows and I didn’t go to review any of them. I only listened to music for fun. It was a much needed reminder that I love everything about music. AND I got to go immerse myself in music I adore. By doing this, I made some discoveries and had some thoughts about my favorite singer/songwriter/artists.

Current Rock On Together August Featured Artist Josh Flint is so good, he makes rock stars who are already established look like rookies. I’m not exaggerating. Go listen. It’s a joy to the ears. I am constantly amazed by his sheer talent and ability to transform songs into emotions.

I always have fun and am amazed when I get to sit in a room and listen to Lee Brice, Jerrod Niemann, Lance Miller, Doug Johnson and Rob Hatch. These guys have it all. I can sit there and drift away with the romantic tunes, feel my heartbreak with the sad songs, laugh until I cry with the hilarious music and smile until my face hurts with the drinking songs. I am never disappointed with the music.

I’ve already told you what I think about Jerrod. If you have read this blog for ANY amount of time, you have heard me rave about the performance and vocal abilities of Lee. Lance has the amazing, old school country sound that takes me back to a time I long to have been a part and his songs are laced with incredible hooks. Rob knows funny, is funny and can turn the funny into meaningful in the blink of an eye. Doug has written so many hit songs for artists, it’s hard to pick which was I love most. They aren’t just hits. They are songs that make an impact on your life in the good way.

Jason Sellers. I have to take a second with this one, because I’ve never really gone into depth about this guy before now. If it is possible for me to catch a Jason Sellers show, I do. This man has one of the best voices in the industry. Not in country music. Not in pop music. Not in rock music. In ALL music. You know I don’t say that very often, so you know how much I mean it.

It is almost impossible for me to hear someone else sing Jason’s songs after I’ve heard him deliver the tune at a writer’s round. He is just that good. Twice now, I have taken friends with me to hear rounds in which Jason has been singing. Both times…after just one verse…both women turned to me and said, “Can he just come to my house and sing to me all night? Wow!” I’m not making that up. Almost the same statement word-for-word.

Jason can take a song he’s written and phrase it in a way that other artists cannot copy. If they try, they fail. When he sings, other respected singer/songwriters smile and shake their heads in awe. I’ve even heard an appreciate outburst or two after one of his vocal runs. I’m not kidding. You’ve never head anything like it.

If you have a chance to catch this man singing live…go. I don’t care how much the cover is. Pay it. It’s worth every cent.

Okay. I’m done. That just needed to be said.

WAKE UP CALL #13: IT ONLY TAKES A FEW NOTES TO DISCOVER GREATNESS

The really, really beloved tunes…can be named in just a few notes. You know what I mean. With just some tickling of the ivories or some strums on the guitar or a few beats on the drum, you automatically get a smile on your face and know what’s coming. Let me give you some examples…

1. “Right Here Waiting” by Richard Marx. Five notes. That’s all.

2. “Need You Now” by Lady Antebellum. This one takes only four notes.

3. “Friends in Low Places” by Garth Brooks. Do you know any other song on the planet where in just four notes an entire crowd breaks the sound barrier with excited screams? I don’t.

4. “Sweet Child O Mine” by Guns ‘N Roses. Eight notes of a sweetly screaming electric guitar and I. Am. In. Play on 80’s rock. Play on.

5. “Free Fallin’” by Tom Petty. Five strums of the guitar makes everything all better. Thank you Tom Petty.

6. “Ice, Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice OR “Under Pressure” by Queen. It depends on the year of your birth for which way you go on this one. “Under Pressure” was first, but when I hear those notes…it’s always gonna be Vanilla Ice. “If there was a problem, yo I’ll solve it. Check out the hook while my DJ revolves it.” HAHAHAHA!

7. “Home Sweet Home” by Motley Crue. Dear, sweet piano how I love thee. Such a great tune. AND it takes but just a second to recognize it’s greatness.

8. “Sweet Home Alabama” by Lynyrd Skynyrd. OR as drunk people in a bar refer to them…SKYNYYYYYYYRRRRRRD! It’s one of THE most memorable songs in the universe. Isn’t it now the state song of Alabama? Classic.

9. “Jailhouse Rock” by Elvis Presley. They don’t call him the King for nothin’. Four notes…separated into sets of two…played on two different instruments. One of my favorite songs of all time. Pure fun.

10. “We Will Rock You” by Queen. Three notes. All on the drums. And you immediately know the song. Come on people! That is impressive. AND a sports anthem for the ages.

WAKE UP CALL #14: MICHAEL IS STILL THE KING OF POP

I cannot believe it’s been a little over a year since we lost such a master in the art of music. While surfing the internet a few weeks ago, I found the 3D Grammy tribute many artists performed for him. These artists are stars in their own right and did a tremendous job. It is pretty incredible and touching. Check it out HERE. Celine Dion, Usher, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson and Smokey Robinson sang along with recorded clips of Michael’s voice. RESPECT!

WAKE UP CALL #15: SONGS FIND YOU WHEN YOU NEED THEM

And so we arrive at the song’s of the month. These found me at different emotional places throughout this past 30 days. They always find me and they always help. Enjoy…

1. “Life Goes On” by Leann Rimes. I loved Leann’s jump into pop music for a short time. This song helped me out a few times. “Shame on you, if you fooled me once. Shame on me, if you fool me twice. You’ve been a pretty hard case to crack. Should have known better, but I didn’t and I can’t go back. Oh, life goes on and it’s only gonna make me strong. It’s a fact. Once you get onboard, say goodbye cause you can’t go back. Oh it’s a fight and I really wanna get it right where I’m at. It’s my life before me. Got a feeling that I can’t go back.”

2. “A Woman’s Worth” by Alicia Keys. This is SUCH a great tune that I forgot about until it came up on the iPod this month. “Cause a real man knows a real woman when he sees her. And a real woman knows a real man aint afraid to please her. And a real woman knows a real man always comes first. And a real man just can’t deny a woman’s worth.”

3. “Feel This” by Bethany Joy Galeotti. The first time she sang on “One Tree Hill,” I thought it was gonna be just another actress who thinks she’s also a singer. However, Bethany can SAAAANG and I adore this tune. “It’s gotta be this one. Don’t have to fake it. You know I can take it. What if I told you, your tears haven’t been ignored. And everything that was taken can be restored.”

4. “Cinderella Man” by Eminem. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite tunes on an all together AMAZING album. If you love rap music, buy the album. He’s BAAAAAACK. “See you can hate him. He don’t blame you. Frankly, he would too. This game could ill afford to lose him. How about you? Now guess who? Here’s a clue. He came to the ball in his wife beater. Lost his Nike shoe. It’s in your ass. He’s in your ass. He’s all up in your psyche too. Now. What’s his name? Cinderella man.”

5. “Hope You Get What You Deserve” by Jerrod Niemann. Remember how I told you his album was full of hits? This is one of them. This is one of two songs that take my breath away. It takes a phrase you connect to one meaning and flips it completely into a new meaning with a positive spin. “What goes around comes around. I’m sure you’ve got it coming back to you. Cause karma has a funny way of settling all the things we do. And girl, right now you know I hurt, so baby for what it’s worth. I hope you get what you deserve.”

6. “Let Me Sign” by Robert Pattinson. Who knew the vampire from Twilight could sing?! Oh, but he can…really, really well. Check out this tune.

7. “Supermassive Black Hole” by Muse. It’s one of those songs that grabs me at the first note and doesn’t let go. I don’t listen for the lyrics. I listen for the exhilarating roller coaster ride I’m on from the start to the finish.

8. “What I Need To Do” by Kenny Chesney. It’s been a while since this tune was on the charts and I love it.  ”What I need to do is turn this car around. Drive as fast as I can ’til I see the lights of our hometown and run to her. And take her in my arms. Make her see how sorry I am. Well, that shouldn’t be so hard. But I drive on and on and on.”

9. “All Fired Up” by Pat Benatar. For almost my entire life…when I needed motivation, I turned to this song. “All fired up. Well, I believe there comes a time when everything just falls in line. We live and learn from our mistakes. The deepest cuts are healed by Faith.”

10. “A Few Short Years” by Ty Herndon. This tune has always put a smile on my face for many obvious reasons. “We headed out of Kansas in a flatbed Ford…just a couple hundred dollars, you and me and the Lord. We didn’t know where we were going. We just knew we had to go…” with a chorus that states: “And maybe it’s crazy and we should have planned better. Saved a little money from the little we made. Guess we should have waited for a better moment. Never taken that chance and played it safe. Sometimes you’ve got to dance with danger. Sometimes you’ve got to face your fears. What’s life if you aint gonna live it? Nothin but a few short years.”

11. “What If It’s Me” by Andy Griggs. It’s a question we hate to ask ourselves, but every once in a while we have to ask. “What if it’s me causing this heartache…blaming everybody else for the bad breaks? Me. Fooling myself. Calling it the hand I’m dealt. I’m sure that it’s her. But what if it’s me?”

12. “How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You” by Junior Walker and the All Stars. It’s a classic for a reason. This one always puts a smile on my face and a skip in my step.

13. “My Heart Is Open” by Keith Urban. I adore almost every song Keith Urban has ever recorded. This one came on the iPod one morning and stopped me in my tracks. I was in love with another tune by the artist. What a great way to live. “And my heart is open. I’m letting you in. Cause you give me a reason and Faith I’ve been needing to start again. And your love is healing. I’m finally breathing. And I’ve been waiting so long hoping for this moment. My heart is open.”

14. “Broken” by Lindsay Haun. Lindsay sings this one so well. The first time I heard her sing it, I was in tears. I think we’ve all been in this place at one point or another. “When you’re broken in a million little pieces and you’re trying, but you can’t hold on anymore. Every tear falls down for a reason. Don’t you stop believing in yourself, when you’re broken.”

15. “Shine On” by Rascal Flatts. It never fails to bring a smile to my face and cheer me up. “Shine on, shine on, shine on me. Whenever something’s missing, you’re exactly what I need. Your love has shown me the light and now I finally see. So shine on, shine on, shine on me.”

Bruce Springsteen once said, “The best music is essentially there to provide you something to face the world with.”

Enter Matt Ramsey…the guy who has an arsenal of songs where music lovers can seek protection from the harsh realities of life, bask in the memories of good times past or enjoy their present state of mind. The tunes hold your hand and guide you through every human emotion. This is because the husband and father has much life experience from which to draw. It is evident in the songwriting, heart-felt delivery and hooks that do exactly what they were constructed to do.

I heart Matt Ramsey. I don’t heart him in the way that will cause his wife to kick my ass or get me served with a restraining order. It’s all about the music. Matt is an incredible artist who writes, sings and performs in a way that positively affects people.

The Virginia native has a country sound, mixed with a driving rock beat. When it comes to the voice…think Springsteen meets Mellencamp meets Ramsey. The songs cover the spectrum of emotional and musical expression. There is the tune that pays homage to physical scars which remind us of emotional pain (“I Want That Scar”). “Come With Me” puts you in the front seat of your car driving down a winding road on a beautiful day. There is the broken-hearted lost love song that delivers the pain of heartbreak effortlessly (“It Still Hurts”). And “What Kind of Man” describes the person every guy should want to be and the man every woman wants to have in her life.

Great singers/songwriters/artists…they are memorable. That unforgettable impression is made the very, first time these people are seen and heard. For me, it has always been a way to measure musical superiority. Nearly three years ago is how long it’s been since the first time I heard Matt Ramsey sing. I remember watching a new artist perform that night and I haven’t missed a song of Matt’s since. The guy is just that good.

Matt is unstoppable (and modest) with vocals and has the ability to craft songs that make you come back for more. The tunes are (above all else) relatable. That is why I consistently return to those songs on my iPod.

As “The Boss” also once said, “The release date is just one day, but the record is forever.”

It’s been 14 years since the first time I saw “Jerry Maguire” and A LOT has changed since that time. Although the movie was excellent during my senior year of high school, I have a whole new appreciation for it now. As we learn and grow and experience life, things that once provided entertainment are now actually relatable. Not to say that I’ve worked with any clients like Rod Tidwell, but I’m sure I could imagine what that would be like in a real life setting.

Therefore, I’d like to share some extremely important communication techniques learned from “Jerry McGuire” in conjunction with some fun pop culture info from the past two weeks.

Jerry Maguire: “When you get on the field, it’s all about what you didn’t get. Who’s to blame. Who under threw the pass. Who’s got the contract you don’t. Who’s not givin’ you your love. And you know what? That is not what inspires people. That is not what inspires people. Shut up. Play the game. Play it from your heart and you know what? I will show you the qwan. And that’s the truth man. That’s the truth. Can you handle it? It’s just a question between friends..you know? Oh and when they call you shrimp, I’M the one who defends you!”

Jerry Maguire Lesson #11: Quit complaining about what you don’t have and learn to love what you do have. Oh yeah and choose friends wisely. They are the ones who will remind you.

As we celebrate the birth of this amazing country, I would also like to focus on some of the freedoms we enjoy as Americans. Since I have seen so many incredible artists and shows the past three weeks, I’m going to have to go about reviewing them in a slightly different way. Know that each artist and song mentioned made a positive impact on me. A mention means two thumbs up and REALLY worth hearing. I know my Mom liked hearing a lot of them.

THE FREEDOM TO USE CELEBRITY FOR GOOD: Three celebrities set great examples on how to use their power for good instead of evil during the past 21 days. Check this out…

Kevin Costner put his money where his mouth is to the tune of $20 million. This money was used to create oil-sucking centrifuges to help clean up the oil in the Gulf.

Oprah gave her staff $10,000 and an iPad as a bonus this year…just because.

While in New Orleans visiting, Lenny Kravitz joined a church choir when he heard them singing his song on the street. Lenny showed the kids what they are doing means something. Showing interest in their talents means more than any amount of money, PSA or autograph. Check it out HERE.

Can I also just say Lenny is the freakin’ definition of cool. What?! He doesn’t have to try…he just is.

THE FREEDOM TO MAKE DECISIONS: As I watch “The Bachelorette” this season, I am reminded of a past bachelor that I loved. Let me clarify…there is only ONE bachelor from the show I have ever respected (I know a lot of them are probably good guys. I can only go with what I see on the show). However, he is the one guy who people absolutely hated. I never really understood why.

Brad Womack was “The Bachelor” back in 2007. Long story short? He didn’t pick either girl…and the women PLUS America were pissed at the guy.

Come on ladies! Don’t we as women always ask men to be honest with us? Do we really have a right to be mad if they are honest and it’s just not the answer we want to hear? Isn’t it WAY more wrong for a guy to lie to us just to avoid hurting our feelings (when in the end our feelings will be hurt anyway)?

Brad did not see a future with either woman. He could have picked one to make America (and one girl) happy for a couple of months…THEN dumped her (like every other Bachelor has done). However, he made the more difficult decision. And I have always respected that. Yes, I just said “respected” about a reality TV star.

HERE is what happened when he met up with DeAnna a few weeks after the show ended. OUCH! Even Ellen was ripping the poor guy (she did apologize afterward though) HERE.

Brad took beating after beating and did not go back on TV afterward. This March was the first time he appeared back on television to talk about everything. The guy also (finally) received an apology from…DeAnna. She became The Bachelorette the next season and got a little taste of what it was like to be in someone else’s shoes. Isn’t it interesting how that happens? Check out the reunion HERE.

Brad, thank you for being an example of a strong man who actually stands by what he believes. I appreciate it. I’m sure there are other women in America who do as well.

THE FREEDOM TO LAUGH: Two of my all-time favorite SNL cast members had some fun together with a sneeze. Yes, a sneeze. Jimmy Fallon and Adam Sandler never fail to make me laugh. I heart these two. Laughing is good medicine and they always deliver. Check out the interview. HAHAHAHAHA!

THE FREEDOM TO REMEMBER: I cannot believe it’s been a year since we lost Michael Jackson. I’ll always remember where I was and what I was doing when they announced he was gone. However, I’d rather remember all the amazing things Michael did while he was still alive. The music is legendary and the artistry is unmatched. There have been many tributes to Michael since he passed away. I got to see Chris Brown deliver one at this year’s BET Awards.

Although Chris got so emotional that he couldn’t sing at the end of the tribute, check out the dancing and everything else he and the dancers did to say thank you to one of the greatest artists/entertainers/singers of all time. It is THE BEST tribute to Michael Jackson I have ever seen. Here’s to hoping Chris truly felt the words and music that have the power to change the world by changing people in it. Click HERE.

THE FREEDOM TO EXPRESS YOURSELF: We live in a country that allows us to do this. I am surrounded by people who express themselves with music and I am so blessed to hear those expressions. This week provided a thought provoking discussion with one of my friends from back home about Eminem.

Before you jump to conclusions, I am the Eminem fan. Yes…me. My friend is the rocker who hates all rap and hip-hop after the 80’s. He feels like all rappers do anymore is cuss and go for the obvious lyric. I have to disagree.

What do you think Syd? My little cousin has officially graduated and has some great opinions as well.

Eminem just released his latest album called “Recovery.” It. Is. Awesome. In two days, I had listened to every song…multiple times. Eminem’s themes are always raw, harsh, graphic and brutal. However, that is what makes each song relatable. He uses common terms that all can understand to describe difficult emotions…feelings we all deal with on a daily basis. He is witty, quick and honest about his own personal battles. I appreciate the honesty.

You don’t have to like him. If you do, this album is well-worth the money. He is an extreme talent and I am constantly amazed at what he can do on a microphone. Check out the latest single “Not Afraid” for a little preview.

2. “N Dey Say” by Nelly. Love the sampling in this tune. Hey! It’s the 80’s…what do you want from me?! “I was at the gas station and a man walked past with his sign will work for food, clothes or cash. And he asked if he could pump my gas, so I let him clean the windshield and throw out the trash. So I let him (Hey!). I even asked a brother his name, where he was from, got kids man and what’s their ages? He kinda stuttered for a second. He kinda looked surprised that anyone would even take an interest in his life. He said young brother them the only words I done heard in the last year that wasn’t ‘no’ or “Get the f&%k away from here.’ How could somethin’ so simple as general conversation, mean much more than general conversation? (Hey!)”

3. “In Your Eyes” by Peter Gabriel. Nothing is better than John Cusack and a Boom Box. Hey! I’m just sayin’. Ohhhh…Lloyd.

4. “Have You Ever Seen the Rain” by Creedence Clearwater Revival. “Someone told me long ago there’s a calm before the storm. I know. It’s been comin’ for sometime. When it’s over so they say. It’ll rain on a sunny day. I know. Shinin’ down like water. I wanna know. Have you ever seen the rain?”

5. “Heart of Life” by John Mayer. Such a simply sweet song. “You know it’s nothing new. Bad new never had good timing. Then the circle of your friends will defend the silver lining. Pain throws your heart to the ground. Love turns the whole thing around. No, it won’t all go the way it should, but I know the heart of life is good.”

6. “Billie Jean” by Michael Jackson. There is a vast canyon in the music world where Michael Jackson used to stand. He is an artist who will go unmatched. RIP Michael.

7. “Jenny From the Block” by Jennifer Lopez. Love this song. Can’t help it. “I stay grounded as the amounts roll in. I really thought I told ya. I really been on Oprah. That’s just me. Nothin’ phony. Don’t hate on me. Whatchya get is whatchya see. Don’t be fooled by the rocks that I got. I’m still..I’m still Jenny from the Block. Used to have a little, now I have a lot. No matter where I go, I know where I came from.”

8. “Bless the Broken Road” by Rascal Flatts. This song never gets old. Ever. “Every long, lost dream led me to where you are. And others who broke my heart, they were like Northern Stars. Pointing me on my way into your loving arms. This much I know is true. God blessed the broken road that led me straight to you.” I also adore the guys singing it with Carrie Underwood HERE.

9. “This Aint Goodbye” by Train. Some songs never, really leave you. They are difficult to forget. This is one of those tunes. “This aint goodbye. This is just where love goes when words aren’t warm enough to keep away the cold. Oh no. This aint goodbye. It’s not where our story ends, but I know you can’t be mine…not the way you’ve always been. As long as we’ve got time, then this aint goodbye.”

10. “Jailhouse Rock” by Elvis. I have loved this one since I started breathing. Awesome at every level. The end.

11. “Free” by the Zac Brown Band. I thought this was appropriate for the 4th of July weekend. It is also an incredible song and the first one I’ve ever purchased from this band. “Just as free…free as we’ll ever be. Just as free…free as we’ll ever be.”

12. “Love the Way You Lie” by Eminem (Featuring Rihanna). Quite possibly my favorite on the album…although it’s nearly impossible to choose just one song as the best. They are all that good. It’s a great pairing of Eminem and Rihanna on this tune. “Just gonna stand there and watch me burn. Well, that’s all right because I like the way it hurts. Just gonna stand there and hear me cry. Well, that’s all right because I love the way you lie. I love the way you lie.”

Dave Pahanish – “Without You.” It’s a new cut by Keith Urban and gets right to the point. “The traveling…singing don’t mean nothin’ without you. Josh Osborne – “Best Thing Going.” What is better than love? Nothing according to this song. “Yeah, as mad as it makes you…as bad as it breaks you…you’d do it all again in a moment. ‘Cause love is the best thing going.” (6/23…Mad Donna’s)

Shane McAnally – “She Moves.” It’s the tune which explains how someone can hook you. “She’s a Hollywood face that’s never been to LA. Kinda kitchy like a dime store gypsy. Like to talk big city just to try and pretty up her roots. She’s nobody’s wife, cuz she hates wearing white. Kinda different like a fingerprint dippin’ in the ink. When you think you got her right where you want her. She moves. And I love the way she moves.” (6/23…Mad Donna’s)

Phil Sanders – “There’s a Place in My Heart.” Phil has played in Keith Anderson’s band for years and is a songwriting talent as well. “There’s a place in my heart I still go when we hold each other in the dark. It’s your love strong and kind. Can you feel the beat between your heart and mine? There’s a place in my heart.” (6/23…Bluebird Cafe)

Adam Gregory – “What It Takes.” A man who goes in with this tactic, wins every time…SUCH an incredibly romantic song!! (6/24…Hotel Indigo…MusicCircle Jam)

Nicole Witt – “Love Will Rock ‘n Roll Ya.” The woman never ceases to amaze me with her music. It was one of those nights that she had me in tears. Isn’t this how it should be? “Love will find you in a heart beat minute. All of a sudden, yeah you’re dancin’ in it. Moving to the rhythm. Groovin’ til you give in. Stop over-thinking. Rhett Akins – “Gimmie That Girl” by Joe Nichols. It’s that sweet, flirty song which reached the top of the country charts. THE FREEDOM TO CHANGE

Ira Dean – “There’s Something About a Sunday.” The hilarious singer/songwriter who started out with the group Trick Pony can keep a crowd thoroughly entertained. The jokes never stop and he is extremely quick-witted onstage. However, this song is one of the deeper tunes in Ira’s catalogue. “There’s something about a Sunday that makes a man feel like someday he can change. Startin’ off all over. Get back to clean and sober. Hope tomorrow I’m not back to the same old same. There’s something about a Sunday makes a man feel like someday he can change.” (6/15…3rd & Lindsley)

Angie Broberg – “Coming Soon to Bethlehem.” I walked in early for a show and was lucky enough to hear Angie sing this song. Wow! “The truth was more than they could handle. It was the greatest little, small town scandal. They couldn’t see the bigger plan. Coming soon to Bethlehem.” (6/14…Hotel Indigo)

Billy Dawson – “What I Miss About Me.” I swear…Billy just gets better and better! This one made me completely stop taking notes for a second to experience the emotion in this tune. “Used to love with a heart wide open. Used to have such fragile skin. But hearts get tougher every time they get broken. Leave the scars on your innocence…til you’re nothin’ like you use to be. That’s what I miss about me.” Unbelievably great. Nicole Witt – “If Jesus Was in This Room.” The tune asks a very, simple question in a very, powerful way. “Would I fall down on my knees? Would I doubt or would I believe? Would I turn and run away? THE FREEDOM TO BE AMAZED

There are three artists who I’ve never told you about before who also WOWED me a couple of weeks ago. I had no idea what I was in for when these two took the stage on the same night.

I had been told about Joanna Cotton often, but had never been able to see and hear her until a few weeks ago at 3rd & Lindsley. O.M.G. The woman is an incredible artist. She’s unique and soulful and funky. I was 100% hooked to the music immediately. It had a New Orleans feel with some country kick. The deep, layered and emotion-filled vocals made the excellent songs that much better. The combination of lyrics and delivery make Joanna’s music inspiring.

“When Something Is Wrong” is the tune about needing people in our lives. “When somethin’ is wrong, everybody need a Savior…a good friend and a favor. Baby, when somethin’ is wrong we gotta learn to share the weight. All I wanna do is help. You’re a fool thinkin’ you can save yourself.”

The tune that took my breath away, held everyone in the bar in captivated awe and got her a HUGE round of applause at the end of the evening was a song called “Keep My Faith.” The voice is overwhelmingly great on this one “Cause when that feeling washes over me, it gives me the strength to believe that I can do what I want and be who I need to be. Every day I find a way to keep my Faith.” WOW! (6/15…3rd & Lindsley)

Another artist who I had not heard before that night was Eric Paslay. He had that voice. That voice that made me sit up and take notice immediately. There were numerous people asking me who he was as well. The man can sing and write a great song! Take the tune “Less Than Whole” for example. “There’s nothin’ like forgiveness to resurrect a soul. Better to give then to get. I’ve been forgiven so I’m lettin’ you know nobody should be less than whole.” (6/15…3rd & Lindsley)

The third amazing, new artist I heard was a old-country sounding extraordinaire by the name of Brandy Clark. Brandy had such a cool voice with excellent guitar playing skills. She makes it look easy. She has a sweet layer to her vocals which make the heart-breaking tunes all the more emotional. “Standin’ in an Airport” was my favorite Brandy tune. “Standin’ in an airport, waitin’ on a train. Lookin’ up and down some runway and all I see are planes. Tryin’ to make you love me…well, it’s the same damn thing. Standin’ in an airport, waitin’ on a train.” (6/23…Mad Donna’s)

THE FREEDOM TO BE BITTER AND ANGRY (IN A HUMOROUS MANNER)

Jaron and the Long Road to Love – “I Pray For You.” This one had me laughing out loud since the first time I heard it. HILARIOUS! How can you not laugh at lines like “I pray a flower pot falls from a window sill and knocks you in the head like I’d like to.” BAHAHAHAHAHA! (6/15…3rd & Lindsley)

Joey+Rory – “Cheater, Cheater.” This is another great song for revenge. I mean, it asks all the right questions in all the right ways. “Tell me Cheater, Cheater where’d you meet that no good white trash Ho?” (6/23…Bluebird Cafe)

THE FREEDOM TO MAKE MISTAKES

Trevor Rosen – “Good to Gone.”  There are sure ways to make sure and end a relationship. Mistakes are okay…just not these errors in judgement. “Stayin’ up all night. Closin’ the bar down. Livin’ like a young George Jones. Stupid fights with your mother-in-law. That’s how you get from good to gone. Remember the game, but you forget about her birthday. Say the wrong name when you’re gettin’ it on. Take it from me, yeah brother that’s a sure way to get from good to gone.” (6/23…Mad Donna’s)

Cory Batten – “If You Had Called Yesterday.” I have always and will always adore this song. Cory wrote it with Wendell Mobley and the tune speaks loudly to not putting off fixing a relationship. There are two versions. Although I heart the Andy Griggs’ cut, Julie Roberts also does a great job with the song. “Cause every night since your goodbye, I hit my knees…closed my eyes and I prayed you’d come back. Too many tears washed out that bridge you wanna cross. Baby, it’s too late for that. Last night would have been a different story, but the morning sun must have done somethin’ for me. ‘Cause I bet I’d have gone the other way if you had called yesterday.” (6/24…Hotel Indigo…MusicCircle Jam)

THE FREEDOM TO BE PASSIONATE

Chuck Wicks – “Hold That Thought.” Holy hot song Batman! Listen to this song with caution. It could make your temperature rise. “Hold that thought. Hold it right there. Let your mind keep runnin’ wild ’til I get there. Just imagine me lovin’ on you all night long. Can you see it? Feel it? Girl, are you there yet? Now, hold that thought.” Ummm…Abso-freakin-lutely! THE FREEDOM TO BE MOVED

So there are certain songs and certain artists I remember for one reason or another. While thinking back through Keith Anderson’s list of hits, a smile crossed my face.

I don’t forget songs that impact my life. I can tell you exactly where I was the first time I heard them OR I picture a spot I was standing or sitting when they came on the radio at a specific point in time. This doesn’t happen often. However, I can remember the first time I heard almost every, single Keith Anderson tune. I never really thought about them as a package until I was preparing to write about hearing Keith sing a couple of times in the past few weeks. Needless to say, his music has moved me since about 2005.

“I Still Miss You” came at a time when heartbreak left me sad and doubting my own judgment in people and love. You can’t help who you miss and this song reminded me that’s it’s okay to miss them.

“Every Time I Hear Your Name” reminds me of a specific person and sitting in the Target parking lot in Donelson when it played on the radio one night.

“Lost In This Moment” was the song I heard first from Big & Rich. Their version reminds me of a wedding in the mountains. I got to watch two of my oldest and dearest friends marry each other and it still brings a smile to my face. There aren’t two people more awesome together.

“Pickin’ Wildfowers” Let’s just say I remember that one. We’ll leave it at that.

Sometimes when the songs are so individually impactful, you forget how incredible the artist is. Keith just so happens to write and sing some amazing tunes. (6/15…3rd & Lindsley/6/23 The Bluebird Cafe)

Jeffrey Steele – “What Hurts the Most.” If you’ve never heard the story behind this song or the delivery from Jeffrey, you are truly missing out. To say it moves people might be the understatement of the century. Jeffrey has a God-given songwriting talent that is only surpassed by his heart. You believe he feels every note of every song he’s ever written. Jeffery is someone you have to experience. I can’t just explain what happens when he performs.

THE FREEDOM TO ENTERTAIN

Jo Dee Messina – “Lesson In Leavin’” and “Heads Carolina, Tails California.” Jo Dee is one of the best live performers on the face of the planet. Hands down. There are very, few people who can come close to the kind of show she puts on. She is also the most underrated artist out there. Hearing her play at the Grand Ole Opry was amazing. Jo Dee…RESPECT! THE FREEDOM TO BE SURPRISED

Robert David Hall – “Things They Don’t Teach You In School.” I had no idea the coroner on CSI could play and sing! He was actually pretty good. It was country with some blues mixed in to the tunes. It was Robert’s first appearance on the Opry and he was SO excited to be there. That is refreshing. (6/19…The Ryman Auditorium…The Grand Ole Opry)

Jeffrey Steele – “International Harvester” by Craig Morgan. The only reason I’m surprised is because this doesn’t sound like a Jeffrey song to me. I was shocked when he started playing it that night. However, it is obviously a good song. (6/23…Bluebird Cafe)

THE FREEDOM TO MOVE ON

Adam Gregory – “Down the Road.” This one was written with some of my favorite songwriters in town. With the help of Lee Brice, Joe Leathers and Kyle Jacobs, Adam sings a sweet and heartbreaking tune. “It’s gonna be beautiful. It’s gonna be easy. It’s gonna be magic. It’s gonna be healing. There’s a place you’re meant to be, but it’s somewhere down the road from me.” (6/24…Hotel Indigo…MusicCircle Jam)

Tiffany Goss – “Like We Never Said Goodbye” by Clay Walker. Sometimes old love finds you again. It is those times when questions arise. “I didn’t know you were gonna be at that bar when I walked in…til I walked in. I looked up. Saw your face. Turned around, then I walked back out again. Then I thought, there’s too much we’ve shared. So I made myself get ahold of myself and I walked back in. And went right up to you. I could feel you were caught off guard. Alana Grace – “Seven Month Itch.” Leave it to a rocker to explain why it’s difficult to maintain a long-term relationship. This one leaves you moving to the beat. “Ooooo…it’s the seven month itch. Happens every time. Oooo…I want someone to love, but I’m probably blind. And I give and I get and I take it away. And I hope and I hurt and I try. But oooo it’s the seven month itch. Happens every time.” (6/25…3rd & Lindsley)

FREEDOM TO DREAM

Tiffany Goss – “If I Had Gone to Georgia.” No matter what decision we make, I think we’re always gonna wonder. This song puts that feeling into words. “If I had gone to Georgia, we’d live right beside the lake. I’d be fryin’ bacon in the morning. I’d be gettin’ kids off to school. Canning peaches for the Crawford County Fair. I wonder if I’d ever wonder what I gave up to be there, if I had gone to Georgia. Instead I went to Tennessee chasing those elusive dreams. FREEDOM TO GO BACK FOR MORE

There are a few artists in this city of who’s music I cannot get enough. They are oh so very talented and the songs leave me wanting more. It’s kind of like going to Disney Land when I get to see one of their shows. I never know what I’m gonna get, but I know it’s gonna be good.

One of those artists is Josh Hoge. He always delivers and I am 100% at attention when Josh is on a stage. A couple of Saturdays ago this guy gave me HOT songs like “Try.” I’ll let the song explain…”Travelin’ through the night to bring you love. Nothin’s gonna keep me gone. I’m gonna try. Try. Try to make up the time for all of these lonely nights when I wasn’t by your side. I’m gonna try for tonight. Baby, it’s all about you. I’m gonna make love to you. Won’t stop til you forget what we went through. I’m gonna try.” See. Told ya.

I also got to hear a new one which was slow, cool and sad. “Shadow” is about what happens when you lose one of those great loves. “Try to run. Try to hide. Leave your memory behind. Like a shadow, you won’t leave. Took you everywhere with me. Took you everywhere with me.”

PLUS, the extremely talented Rachel Proctor took the stage to sing with Josh on the tune “Space.” These two are incredible together! They did a vocal battle that left a permanent smile on my face. The blend is unmatched and it is obvious that these two have a lot of fun singing together. “Empty picture frames on my walls. All I hear is silence in these halls. No one else seems to replace. Tell me what am I gonna do to fill all your space? To fill all your space?” WOW!

Just when I think Josh has everything covered, he takes it one step further. Josh and pals gathered onstage to sing a bluegrass song which left the entire bar silent in awe. There are no other words to describe it.

It was also nice that the rocker took some time to rock on together with me.

One of the other artists I always enjoy hearing is Dear, Sweet Chris Nathan. Chris can deliver any emotion you want delivered. Sweet, romantic and sassy comes wrapped in a bow in the form of “Sugarcane.” Let me explain…”Your love is real love and not a drop is wasted. Oh your love is sweeter than anything I’ve tasted. Well, I would dig a hole to Hell and fight the flames. If the Devil shackled me, I’d break his chains to taste your sugarcane. You’re sweeter than a summer rain. Cuts through me like a windy day and nothin is sweeter than your sugarcane.”

Chris can also guide you through some heartbreak with the catchy and sad “Someone I Used to Know.” It’s a slow, melancholy train that makes you want to get onboard. “I took a fly to Vegas. Road a bus to L.A. Hitchhiked up to Seattle just to feel the rain. No matter where I am. No matter where I go. Aint nothin’ changed. You’re just someone I used to know.”

Let us not forget why we are blessed enough to live in the freedom we enjoy every day in this great country. It is because of those who have fought for our rights and are still fighting. We owe them more than we can ever repay. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you to all the men and women who have given all for America and her people. It’s tradition at my house to play THIS SONG for the 4th of July. It’s always brought me to tears. I sure do love this country and all of y’all in it.

Aretha Franklin once said, “Being a singer is a natural gift. It means I’m using to the highest degree possible the gift that God gave me to use.”

Not only does Shanna Crooks use her vocal talents to impress and inspire, she sings in a way that lends to only one description. She is a freak of nature. I mean that in an extremely positive way…as in no human being should be as talented in the art of music as this woman. Shanna is vocally superior, has an extreme amount of songwriting talent and she’s gorgeous. I should hate her.

It has been three years since I first heard Shanna sing. That night she tore into a song co-written by James Otto called “Shut Up Girl” (which will always be one of my all-time favorites) and earned herself another fan.

Signed to Atlantic Records (home of artists like P. Diddy, Death Cab For Cutie, James Blunt, Jason Mraz, Metallica, Lupe Fiasco, Rob Thomas, Flo Rida, Kid Rock and MATCHBOX TWENTY…to name a few), Shanna is a quadruple threat in the music industry.

Threat Number 2 = The Voice. No one sounds quite like the Ft. Lauderdale, Florida native. Shanna is a combination of Joss Stone (vocal depth), Pat Benatar (sass), Aretha Franklin (soul), Christina Aguilera (power) and Whitney Houston (vocal styling). However, keep in mind the final sound is all her own. It’s a voice is like no other. Sha is and has always been a “one name” singer.

Threat Number 2 = The Songwriting. Shanna writes for both women and men. Songs like “I’ll Be Your Escape” let men know what a good woman will do for them, while “Shut Up Girl” delivers some independent woman sass. “Wakin’ Up To Love” is the fun, lighthearted tune that provides a soundtrack to the Clean and Clear Morning Burst national advertising campaign.

Although Shanna is known for the fun and sass in her music, she can also write and deliver songs that are touching and heart-wrenching. One of her most recent soon-to-be hits, “Go” (co-written with Richard Marx) delivers freeing and sound advice. “It’s like tryin to fix a broken dream or save a heart that doesn’t beat. Only one left hangin on. Let it fall. Let it fall. When no one’s there to pick you up and you think you’ve had enough. When things are out of your control, let it all. Let it all go.”

Shanna also has songwriting credit on a cut by the very, first American Idol. Check out the Kelly Clarkson song “Can We Go Back.”

Threat Number 3 = The Entertainer. When someone walks into a venue where Shanna is singing, they can hear each song perfectly. That is because every person in attendance is focused on the singer and the tune she is singing. Shanna pulls the listener in and holds them in the palm of her hand, because she is in command of everything she does on a stage. The message is delivered effectively because the listener wants to hear the end of the story.

Threat Number 4 = The Heart. There are artists out there who really do love the music and the people who surround them. They are chasing the dream because they believe in it and have a gift…period. Shanna is one of those artists. Shanna is someone you cheer for to make it not just because of her massive talent, but also because of her impressive character and heart.

I could go on and on about this artist, but there is nothing I can say that will get the point across quite like a quote from another one-named talent named Whitney Houston.

“God gave me a voice to sing with, and when you have that, what other gimmick is there?”

Happy belated Father’s Day to all the Dads out there! I have to be honest…being designated a father doesn’t take much more than one night. However, being a DAD takes a lifetime and DADS earn that title.

Being a parent has GOT to be a terrifying thing. The risks involved with loving and raising a little person you helped to create are numerous. However, there are so many men who step up to the challenge and do such a wonderful job. Those are the true heroes. Do you know why? Providing love by being a role model, support system, guide, protector, mentor and safe place for your kids to fall, means everything. You are molding those little people into great individuals. Your love (along with their mother’s love) means the world.  There is no amount of money or gifts that can take the place of a Dad’s love.

I am so, very blessed to have one of the greatest Dads on the planet. Dads do so much for their sons and daughters in the way of teaching them about self-worth, independence, love and a myriad of other things. To all the Dads out there…thank you. You are changing the world for the better.

And to my Dad, thanks for taking the risk. Everything in life I cherish is that way because of you and Mom. I can never thank you enough. Thanks for the hugs, advice, talks, debates, etc. Love ya!

RISK IT IF…you want to stretch your artistic boundaries and have the talent to impress.

I have been a Madonna fan pretty much my whole life. However, it was a surface level love of her music. I thought she was a marketing genius and that is why her recording career was as successful as it was. The woman IS a marketing genius, but it took her taking a HUGE risk for me to truly respect her as an artist.

The year was 1996 and Madonna decided to do a little movie called “Evita.” Absolutely incredible. From that point forward, I never doubted her ability again. If you haven’t seen it, rent it. From beginning to end, it’s stunning. What do you think girls (Who am I kidding? Most of them weren’t even old enough to remember the movie. Damn!)?

I usually have a problem with the Oscars because of the politics. I never had a bigger problem with them than the year Madonna wasn’t even NOMINATED for that role. Keep in mind, she had just WON the Golden Globe. It still ticks me off to this day.

One of her very, best songs is the heartbreaking tune, “You Must Love Me.” It is understated, timid and delivered perfectly by the music veteran. Madonna…RESPECT.

RISK IT IF…you want to really learn about someone and you want them to learn about you.

A really interesting topic was explored in a recent episode of “Criminal Minds.” (I know! I know! It’s an odd place for a topic, but it’s still noteworthy.) The team discussed the importance of eye contact.

Eye contact can tell you VOLUMES about people in a matter of minutes. Remember that oft stated quote…”The eyes are windows to the soul.”

This is the reason people don’t make eye contact with someone they are attracted to when they are unsure if the attraction is reciprocal or if they don’t want the attraction to be known. It gives away too much information in the early stages of the dating game.

Have you ever looked into the eyes of murders, prisoners, the criminally insane or any heartless human when they are interviewed on TV? It is a truly creepy experience…even when you know they are far away. There is that same vacant or uncaring look in the eyes.

Those who are in love have a spark in the eye that others are quick to notice. Those who are in pain emit absolute heartbreak from those windows. Those who like to joke and have a little smart ass fun tell you with their eyes before they have a chance to speak (they are my favorites).

If you’ve ever been to a seminar in the corporate world, they often make you do an exercise where you stare into a stranger’s eyes for a full minute. It’s SO interesting. You share this intimate moment with a complete stranger and not a word is spoken. If you are a private person, it’s a struggle not to look away. The whole thing is actually really cool and unsettling all at the same time.

If you are sure the person is worth it, take the risk. Really LOOK at them and let them LOOK at you. It’s amazing what you will learn about each other and how you will grow. Promise.

So I came across a really cool YouTube link last week and I have to share it with you. As we near the 4th of July, it’s important to remember all those amazing men and women who serve this great country. Many of them gave all they had and I will be eternally grateful.

People always give me a funny look when they find out Edgar Allan Poe is my favorite poet. Hey! What did you expect? Dr. Seuss?!

He is such an amazing wordsmith, but what I find most interesting is how he expresses himself. You see on the surface the poems are dark. If you dig a little deeper, you find the man’s immense ability to FEEL. Let’s face it. You cannot experience and appreciate the light without knowing what the darkness feels like. Edgar just gives the darkness words.

Open yourself up to works that may not exactly mirror your personality. You might learn more about yourself than you ever thought you could.

3. “Sidestep” by Robin Thicke. This one is FUN! You gotta get your disco on and dance. Those who don’t move with this song, do not enjoy life. The end.

4. “Dreaming With a Broken Heart” by John Mayer. Dear, sweet John Mayer always delivers in the way of music. This one piano danced it’s way onto my iPod this week and made a short stay in my head. “When you’re dreaming with a broken heart, the waking up is the hardest part. You roll out of bed and down on your knees. And for a moment you can hardly breathe.”

5. “I’m Tryin’” by Martina McBride. The first time I heard this song was a great version done by Chely Wright and Diamond Rio. I latched onto the tune right away. Put Martina’s voice on it and the meaning jumps to a whole other level. WOW! It is the soundtrack for a relationship in distress. “No, I can’t change. What’s done is done, but I can tell you this. Not a day goes by that I don’t curse myself and all my sins. And I need you to hold on too while this part of me is dying. Though I haven’t kicked the demons that haunt me. I’m tryin’.”

6. “Lead Me On” by Steve Holy (written by Chuck Wicks). It’s a rare HOT song that is sweet at the same time. I fell in love with the tune the second I listened to it a few years back. “It’s your call. Your move. Baby, it’s up to you ’cause I know you know I’m in your hands. I’m so in love with everything you do. So don’t lead me wrong. Lead me on.” Wow.

7. “Dust on the Bottle” by David Lee Murphy. It’s a classic and I adore it. Every time I hear this song, it takes me back a few years. “There might be a little dust on the bottle, but don’t let it fool you about what’s inside. There might be a little dust on the bottle. It’s just one of those things that gets sweeter with time.”

8. “I Wanna Know What Love Is” by Mariah Carey. The original was outstanding. AND Wynonna’s version is one of my personal favorites. However (as usual), Mariah holds her own with this tune. “In my life there’s been heartache and pain. I don’t know if I can face it again. Can’t stop now. I’ve traveled so far to change this lonely life. I wanna know what love is. I want you to show me. I wanna feel what love is. I know you can show me.”

9. “Like We Never Said Goodbye” by Clay Walker (written by Tiffany Goss and Cory Batten). This one is different and cool at the same time. I think we’ve all been here at some point in our lives. “I didn’t know you were gonna be at that bar when I walked in…til I walked in. Looked up. Saw your face. Turned around and walked back out again. Then I thought there’s too much we’ve shared. So I made myself get ahold of myself and I walked back in. Went right up to you. I could see that you were caught off guard. Neither one of us knew just what to do. So I said, ‘How ya been? Been a while. Tell me how’s your Mama?’ You said, ‘Good. You can sit down if you wanna.’ I said, ‘I was just thinkin bout Oklahoma. Wild roller coaster ride we had that summer.’ Before I knew it we were on our second glass of wine. 10. “All Fired Up” by Pat Benatar. What a great soundtrack song for a “risks” blog! It’s been one of my favorites for a whole lot of years. “Aint nobody livin’ in a perfect world. Everybody’s out there cryin’ to be heard. And now I’ve got a new fire burnin’ in my eyes. Lightin up the darkness. Movin’ like a meteorite. (All fired up) Now I believe there comes a time when everything just falls in line. (All fired up) We live and learn from our mistakes. (All fired up) The deepest cuts are healed by Faith.”

11. “Hold That Thought” by Chuck Wicks. It is great. It is hot. It is worth the listen and/or watch. “Now, hold that thought. Hold it right there. Let your mind keep runnin’ wild til I get there. Just imagine. Me lovin’ on you all night long. Can you see it? Feel it? Girl, are you there yet? Now, hold that thought.” Yes, Sir!

12. “I Will Not Say Goodbye” by Danny Gokey. I told you about this one in January when I heard Danny perform it live. It. Is. Incredible. Don’t get me wrong…it’s hard to watch, but the meaning is so heartbreakingly amazing. I’m so glad it’s the current single. Make sure you are emotionally ready to watch this one. “I don’t wanna feel better. I don’t wanna not remember. I will always see your face in the shadows of this haunted place. I will laugh. I will cry. Shake my fist at the sky, but I will not say goodbye.”

RISK IT IF…the music moves.

So I started off the second half of the CMA Fan Fest at a Rock/Pop/Hip-Hop show. When you hear Chris Nathan, you will understand why.

Dear, sweet Chris was playing at the Blue Bar and I hadn’t heard him in a while. That is unacceptable. I always feel a peace of mind when listening to this talented man.

Who else can cover “No Diggity” and then jump into an original tune about emotional roller coasters called “All Four Seasons in a Day”?

Chris always plays the go-to original songs that matter like “Always” and “Spin.” The second he starts singing, everyone in the bar is paying attention and swaying along. He has enough loyal fans, that many are singing his songs back to him.

This time I also got to hear Chris cover a Johnny Cash tune. He put his own very, cool spin on the song “Long, Black Veil.” With that unique tone to his voice and phrasing mastery, Chris stated the haunting lyrics. “She walks through these hills in a long, black veil. She visits my grave when the nightly winds wail. Nobody knows. Nobody sees. Nobody knows but me.”

Mr. Nathan also has the ability to craft amazingly catching songs that leave me singing them for days. Go listen to and buy the tune “Sugarcane.” LOVE IT! “Your love is sweeter than anything that I’ve tasted. Well, I would dig a hole to Hell and fight the flames. If the Devil shackled me, I’d break his chains to taste your sugarcane.It’s sweeter than a summer rain. Blows through me like a windy day. Nothin is sweeter than your sugarcane.”

The other “stay with me” tune of the night was called “Someone I Used to Know.” It’s slow and easy. That makes the song even more likable. “I took a fly to Vegas. Rode a bus to LA. Hitch-hiked to Seattle just to feel the rain. No matter where I am. No matter where I go. Aint nothin’ changed. Just someone I used to know.”

Two thumbs up (as usual) Chris! Carry on…

Later that night took me to see/hear another artist I love and haven’t seen/heard in a while. Dear, sweet Jared Blake was rockin things downtown at 2nd Ave. Live.

Ray and Brit seemed to be having a good time…

Jared is that artist with an edge who also projects a softer side. He is the working man with a rebellious streak. His voice is rugged and hard, while at the same time warm and huggable. It’s a perfect kind of confusion. You listen to the music intently for that reason. You want to know the artist. AND the songs give you a glimpse of Jared.

I mean, there were people who came in off of 2nd Avenue just to see and hear what was going on inside. They ended up staying for a while.

I lean on the catchy/fun songs from Jared like “Easy Lovin’ You.” However, I also stay to hear the biographical tunes like “Whiskey in My Water” (written by Bobby Pinson). “I got whiskey in my water. Willie in my truck. Miss me in my hello. Gypsy in my blood. Teardrops in my wallet. White boy in my blues. And you don’t even know it yet, but Baby I got you.”

Then there will be one of my all-time Jared favorites called “Some Things a Man Can’t Walk Off.” Face it ladies. Sometimes we want the men who didn’t stay to feel this kind of pain. “Here I sit thinkin’ bout a lover. Heart in one hand…bottle in the other. She lies in another man’s arms who aint near as good as me. And it burns to know that I’m the fool who let her go so I sit on this stool and try to drink away all I’ve lost. ‘Cause there’s some things a man can’t walk off.”

PLUS, I had to have a question answer session with Jared that night. Ummm…Jared, what are you doing with a GALLON of water?

No. I couldn’t possibly…

I also have to give a shout out to Chance. Here he is with me and Jenn…

I am a little snobby when it comes to DJs. It takes a VERY specific talent to be good at spinnin music for crowds. You have to read the audience, not miss a beat in between songs and have an instinct about where the pacing should go from tune to tune.

Chance is a natural. He got onstage right after Jared was finished and kicked things off with “Crazy Bitch.” He kept the flow kept going with “You Shook Me All Night Long.”

When he noticed the crowd might be a little bit country with an edge…out came “Cowboy Casanova.” Followed by a fun dance mix of “Dust On the Bottle.”

AND right before we left, he busted out music by the Trailer Choir (a new country trio who are a whole lot of fun) called “Off the Hillbilly Hook.”

Chance, that was impressive!

RISK IT IF…the heat doesn’t matter.

We enter into CMA Fan Fest Weekend which is notoriously hot. By hot, I mean that humid, 187 degree kind of day. However, when the artists are that good…it can be tolerated.

First up, was another “Dear, Sweet.” That would be Dear, Sweet Lee Brice at the Riverfront Stage.

How can I best explain Lee Brice? Let’s see…Lee Brice is such a great performer when he is onstage, even the men think he is singing to them…and they’re flattered by it.

Lee is one of the songwriting masterminds behind Garth Brooks’ mega-hit “More Than a Memory” and Lee sings it even better…no lie. He can make a crowd get dance crazy without them even realizing it. Just watch him play “Four on the Floor.” I cannot begin to explain my infatuation with that song. It’s an anomaly. Then there is the tune that makes me stare in awe a little bit. I’ll admit it. Ladies, if you heard him sing “Try” you would too. Trust me on this one.

The song that is currently climbing the charts for Lee is called “Love Like Crazy.” This one is incredible and pretty much sums up the meaning of life. “Be a best friend. Tell the truth and overuse ‘I love you.’ Go to work. Do your best and don’t outsmart your common sense. Never let your prayin knees get lazy. And love like crazy.”

Next up on the Riverfront Stage was Emerson Drive. These Canadians rock my face off and have for years. What a great band!

The voices and blend are pure ear candy. That is the bottom line. Your ears are pleased at what they hear when these men start to sing a song. They are professional romantics with tunes like their new single. It’s called “She’s That Kind of Beautiful.”

They have the ability to teach life lessons in songs like “Moments” and “A Good Man.” They can also vocalize falling in love with tunes like “I Should Be Sleeping” and “Fall Into Me.”

People know and love these songs! Do you know how I know that? The band stopped on the final chorus of “Fall Into Me” and the crowd kept right on singing. That has got to be one of the coolest things an artist can experience.

Do you know what has ALWAYS impressed me about this band? Their music expertise…both instrumentally and vocally. If you know the song “Fall Into Me,” you also know that there is no lead in for that vocally. Do you know how impossible it is to hit harmonies on that kind of intro?! Emerson Drive jumps into it like it’s second nature to them. Perfect every time. THAT my friends in extremely impressive.

Next up was some girl power on the Chevy Stage with Mallary Hope. This woman can SAAAAANG and write a great song.

Check out “I’m a Girl” if you’re a girl with some sass. I adored this one…no particular reason why. “‘Cause I’m a girl. Oh yeah. I can get a free drink by flippin my hear. Stay home with a bottle of wine and you. I’m a girl. I got skills. I can dance all night in 5-inch heels. And make you feel like the luckiest boy in the world. ‘Cause I’m a girl.”

Mallary sing biographical music like the song about her sister’s life called “Wise Beyond Her Tears.” And the talented singer/songwriter produces caring in a tune called “Blossom in the Dust.”

Finally, Mallary can bring you to your knees with the broken, yet hope-filled tune called “Love Lives On.” “And even though I cry like crazy. Even though it hurts so bad. I’m thankful for the time God gave me even though we couldn’t make it last. I’m learnin how to live without you even though I don’t want to. And even with you gone, love lives on.”

If you love great country music, listen to Mallary. It’s worth your time.

The girl power continued on Sunday with the musical stylings of Whitney Duncan. She is a tiny woman with a big voice. The girl has some sass to her songs as well. There were quite a few relatable tunes.

“So Sorry Mama” was about not taking your Mother’s advice when it comes to men. I have NO IDEA what that song is about…at all.

Whitney was also holding the gavel with the tune “Judgment Day.” It’s all about the men who do us wrong…and karma. “Whatever you’ve done. Whatever you did. The Good Lord raised me to forgive. Bite my tongue. Turn my cheek and just walk away. A lie’s a lie and the truth’s the truth. I aint the one you gotta answer to. Let’s just say I wouldn’t want to be you on judgement day.”

She finished with great (and reasonable) expectations in the form of “When I Said I Would.” The chorus says it all. “When I said I would, tell me what was I thinkin’? I gave my heart without even blinkin’. That’s all ya got? Well,  Baby…that’s just no good. Don’t give me that line. You know I won’t buy it. You’re as good at love as you are at lyin’. You said uh-huh, but I just don’t think you understood when I said I would.”

Whitney carried on the torch of girl power awesomeness. Go listen.

You might have heard me discuss the next band in great detail. They go by the name of KingBilly. These guys are a music treat to watch/hear and that Sunday was no different. They kept the tired and hot crowd happy and dancing. That was no easy feat.

I love the play on words in songs like “Damn This River.” It’s the heartbreak tune that leads you in a slightly different direction then first assumed. “Damn this river makes me miss her. Reminds me of what I aint got. Her goodbye left me cryin’. Now all these tears won’t stop until I dam this river.” Nice!

For fun, plug into the songs “I Wanna Come Back As Her Beer” and “Stompin’ Ground.” Even in the extreme heat, the crowd was clapping along with the band.

For some sweet steel guitar action, listen to “She Got Me Good.”

Finally, look for meaning in loss with the tune “Ones That Got Away.” Hey! Raise a glass and sing along…”There’s more fish in the sea. It just wasn’t meant to be. You can’t win ‘em all. I’m probably better off. That’s why they call it Faith. Here’s to the ones that got away.” Added bonus…Matt rapped part of the “Fresh Prince of Bel Air” theme song.

They also sang my very favorite, fast, fun KingBilly song called “When She Breaks Down.” Love. It.

After a lunch break for pancakes, it was back to the Chevy Stage to see the Trailer Choir. There are four words to describe this trio…fun, fun and MORE fun. Every song puts a smile on the crowds face. Crystal, Vinny and Butter have a way with people that puts them at ease. Crowds feel like they are friends of the band.

The crowd at the Chevy stage grew quickly from the time we arrived until Trailer Choir was finished. Check it out…

The show was well-paced and the move from song to song was seamless with Butter serving as the emcee and lead singer. Vinny was the dancing extraordinaire and Crystal was the power vocals.

For humor, check out the school about bullies…a specific kind of bully actually. It’s called “Your Lucky Day.” The other full-fledged LOL tune is called “Rockin’ the Beer Gut.”

For laid-back summer fun there was “Rollin’ Through the Sunshine,” while “Off the Hillbilly Hook” provided the “refusal to dance is not permitted” song of the day.

The crowd was in full-participation mode for the entire Trailer Choir set. It was quite impressive. Carry on y’all!

AND…then there was the Locash Cowboys. What to say? What to say? I feel like I’ve said it all already. If you haven’t seen them, listened to them or at least voted for the video by now…you’re out of your mind. Too harsh? Nah.

Here is the setting. It’s 215 degrees outside by this point of the day. The crowd is tired and hot…has been listening to music all day…is preparing to listen to music all night…isn’t quite sure what they are in for AND not quite sure if they even care. Enter…the Locash Cowboys.

“C-O-U-N-T-R-Y” has the crowd smiling and some are singing along. “Fresh Off the Farm” has them connecting to familiar lyrics.  “You Got Me” brings the clapping of the hands and tapping of the feet.

Then comes a much-needed break in the energy for the harmonytastic “Keep In Mind”…and the crowd listens. Then it’s back to the races with a brand, new single called “Here Comes Summer.” The entire audience perks up because they know this one. Singing along commences.

Finally, Chris and Preston bring out Storme Warren to help them out with a song for the Troops (“Fight For Your Right To Party”).

By the end of the 20 minute set, the entire crowd is jumping up and down (because Locash asked them to do it). Did I mention it was 215 degrees outside? Oh…okay. Just checking.

My very favorite part of Locash Cowboys show is watching crowds transform. And it happens every time. There are doubters transformed. There are questioners transformed. There are passersby transformed. There are 100% detractors transformed. It makes me happy. That…ladies and gentlemen…is what you call the “It” factor.

I think that sums it up.

The day was finished off by a new trio called Stealing Angels. The group is comprised of Tayla Lynn, Jennifer Wayne and Caroline Cutbirth.

I have heard all three of these women separately, but it was the first time I’d ever heard them collectively. WOW! I have to admit I was impressed by many things about this group.

First, I was impressed with their ability to harmonize so perfectly. The first three-part they hit had me shaking my head in approval. Nice.

Second, I was impressed with the sweet and sassy combination in the songs. Check out the tune “He Better Be Dead.” HAHAHAHAHA! Love. It. “He better be dead…his house burnt down to the ground. He better have two wheels hangin’ off a crumbling ledge, the way I’m feelin’ now. I’m swearin’ his head better be pressed up agains t a gun. After all the things we said. If he aint called by now, he better be dead.”

My other fave from these three was the song “If I Smoked.” This makes 100% sense to me. How about you? “If I drank, I’d be drowin’ in whiskey. If I gambled, I’d be swimmin’ in debt. If I cheated, I’d be runnin’ round this town with your best friend…Lovin’ up on him. If I cussed, I’d have the dirtiest mouth. If I chewed, I’d spit you out. If I smoked, I’d light one up and burn your memory down to the ground.”

Give these ladies a listen. It’s old-school country…and I like it!

RISK IT IF…the Tweet is entertaining.

This week’s “Tweet of the Week” comes from Josh Flint (although it was on Facebook and not Twitter). “There’s an ‘anti-snoring’ iPhone app that beeps when you snore to encourage you to shift positions. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the equation unless the person who hates your snoring also happens to hate loud beeping noises all night.” BAHAHAHAHA!

RISK IT IF…the words have meaning.

SUCCESS IS FUN…Happy CMA Fan Fest y’all! I love this time of year…minus the crowds, heat, overpriced water and traffic. Okay, so the music rocks.

You know I’m kiddin’! I love you guys for helping to rebuild this city we love by coming in droves to the party this year. You have no idea how much it meant to the Nashville economy, community and country music as a whole. I give you HUGE thanks.

There will be pictures from many adventures this week scattered throughout the blog. Hope you enjoy them…or become confused by them.

This music review will serve as Part I and will cover shows seen Saturday through Thursday of last week. Part II will cover Friday through Sunday. There is LOTS to discuss, so let’s get started shall we?

SUCCESS IS SONGS…Since CMA Fan Fest is the topic at hand, the top songs of the week come from the country genre.

1. “The Heart Won’t Lie” by Reba McEntire and Vince Gill. It takes me right back to High School. I forgot about this one until it played on the iPod this week. Incredible song…even more incredible video. It doesn’t hurt that two of the most loved and most recognizable voices in country music sing it.

2. “If I Knew Then” by Lady Antebellum. I love this song so much that while walking down the street in Key West I heard the first verse and changed directions. This forced the entire group I was with to do the same and look at me like I was crazy. Songwriter Monty Powell was playing in a round and singing this song. The song is simple, pure and breathtaking. Bottom line…It. Is. Awesome.

3. “That’s Why I’m Here” by Kenny Chesney. What is the most sensitive and thoughtful way to discuss addiction and what it can do to your life? No need to answer. Just listen to the song.

4. “I Know How the River Feels” by Diamond Rio. I have loved this group since I started listening to country music. What an incredible way to explain love and finding that person who is made for you.

5. “Heaven” by Bryan Adams and Jason Aldean. So I’m kind of cheating on this one since it’s not technically a country song. However, this is from the CMT Crossroads taping and Jason Aldean is singing on it. That makes it country. Hey! My review…my rules. I didn’t think I’d like anyone else singing this song, but Jason does an outstanding job on his parts of the song. All of his fans have been trying to convert me to an Aldean fanatic for the past couple of years. Songs like this are convincing me. “Baby you’re all that I want when you’re lying here in my arms. I’m finding it hard to believe we’re in Heaven. And lovin is all that I need and I find it there in your heart. It isn’t too hard to see, we’re in Heaven.” I love that freakin’ song! Thank you Bryan Adams.

6. “Love Like Crazy” by Lee Brice. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. NOBODY can do to a song what Lee Brice can do to a song…NOBODY. A show with Lee is an experience and this song is a gem. Head on over to iTunes or to your local music store and buy the new album. It’s worth every penny. Promise. “Be a best friend. Tell the truth and overuse I Love You. Go to work. Do your best and don’t outsmart your common sense. Never let your prayin’ knees get lazy and love like crazy.”

7. “Red Light” by David Nail. It’s one of those songs. If I listen to it once, I have to listen to it three more times. So catchy…so relatable…so well-produced…so vocally sound. “At a red light in the sunshine on a Sunday nothin’s safe. Don’t even try. Some are comin’ home. Some are leavin’ town while my world’s crashin’ down on a Sunday in the sunshine at a red light.”

8. “Boots On” by Randy Houser. Dear, Sweet Randy Houser played on the Main Stage this year!!!!! How awesome is that?! All I have to hear is “in my dirty old hat with my crooked little grin…” and I’m smilin’…mainly because I can picture the guy from the lyrics alone. Randy’s amazing and I cannot wait for album number 2 coming in the Fall. WOOOOOOO WHOOOOOOOO!

9. “You Won’t Ever Be Lonely” by Andy Griggs. The great songs never get old. This is one of those songs. Such a sweet way for a man to convey his love for a woman. It’s really not that difficult guys. Try this…”For as long as I live there will always be a place you belong here beside me. Heart and soul…Baby you only. And I promise you now. You won’t ever be lonely.”

10. “Days of Our Lives” by James Otto. This one hit the airwaves quite a while ago for James. I immediately attached to the song. The meaning of this tune combined with James voice…perfect. “They say dance every dance and live each day as thought it’s your last and tell those who you love how ya feel before it’s too late. Life is right here and now we only go around just one time. So embrace ‘em don’t waste ‘em for these are the days of our lives.”

11. “Somebody Like You” by Keith Urban. I have loved this tune since the first time I heard it. It’s so much fun and just…sun shiny. It makes me want to grab a good man, jump in a car and head for the nearest beach. “I wanna feel sun shine…shinin’ down on me and you. When you put your arms around me, you let me know there’s nothin’ in this world I can’t do-ew-ew-ew-ew-ew.” PLUS, if you listen to the album cut, you get to marvel at the greatness of Keith Urban instrument playing. The man is amazingly talented.

12. “I’m Alright” by Jo Dee Messina (written by Phil Vassar). She puts on one of the best live shows I’ve seen by any artist in any genre…ever. The woman does not get enough credit for everything she’s done. I’m actually amazed by the accomplishments. If you haven’t seen her perform live, you are robbing yourself of serious entertainment. Find a show and GO! I love this song for the pure fun of it. It never fails to make me smile “I’m all…I’m all…I’m alright. It’s a beautiful day and not a cloud in sight so I guess I’m doin’ alright. I’m all…I’m all…I’m alright. I got a good old friend here with me tonight and I guess I’m doin’ alright.”

SUCCESS IS THE LIFE OF JOHN WOODEN…The great Coach Wooden passed away this month. Hearing the news of his death made me stop and say a few words for a man who was much more than a coaching genius. He was a life genius. If the wins would not have come at UCLA, his players would have still been champions based solely on the life lessons they got from a master teacher.

I use John Wooden quotes a lot because they are simple, profound, logical, meaningful and true. He had 99 years of life experience and by all accounts it was a life well-lived. So I decided to give you my Top 5 favorite Coach Wooden quotes.

1. “Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.”

2. “Talent is God-given. Be humble. Fame is man-given. Be grateful. Conceit is self-given. Be Careful.”

SUCCESS IS SERENITY…There are many places to find serenity. We each have our own. It can be a room in your house. It can be a spot in the yard. It can be the beach or the mountains. Do me a favor and make sure you find your place. Then do me another favor and make sure you go there every once in a while. It’s important.

SUCCESS IS WUV. TRUE WUV…Despite all the examples of love falling apart, there are still many that are inspiring (watch John Wooden story above). I can tell you about many real life couples (HAPPY ANNIVERSARY MOM AND DAD!!!). I can tell you about movie couples (“The Notebook” anyone?). I can tell you about Fairytale couples (“Aladdin”).

However, since it is CMA Fan Fest week, I’ll tell you about one of the country music love stories. You know where I’m going with this one don’t you?

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill are so in love, when they sing together I feel like I’m interrupting their moment. Seriously?! I guess it could all be an act, but if so…they are darn good actors. With all the celebrity marriages on the rocks for cheating and…well, cheating, it’s nice to watch one that is still so passionate. Still not know what I mean? Watch “It’s Your Love” or “Let’s Make Love” or “I Need You.”

The whole point of this section? Love is the only thing in which you should truly care about being successful. Love comes in it’s own time…I really believe that. Just make sure you aren’t too busy to recognize it when it arrives. Love in and of itself is success.

SUCCESS IS THE BIG XII CONFERENCE…Wait. What?! Are you saying that’s an iffy statement? I’m holding onto the last shred of hope people! Don’t steal that from me. That’s just mean.

BTW…Whatever Nebraska! Here I thought I was going to be blaming Texas and you are the school holding the knife. I just might travel to every school you play this year just to cheer for the other team. Here’s to hoping that in 2011 Ohio State, Michigan and every other school in the Big 10 makes your life miserable…forever. Too harsh? Yeah, I know. Not harsh enough.

*I just threw that in as a nicety. There were no tears shed nor things broken at the announcement the Buffaloes were leaving the conference. What?! There weren’t.

SUCCESS IS 1987…I met Tiffany (Yes, that one). AHHHHHHH!

Seriously. Last Saturday, I went to The Listening Room with my friend Macey to hear one of my favorite childhood singers. Back in the fourth grade, I wore that “Tiffany” cassette tape out! It was an amazingly fun night and was full of songs from the past as well as great new tunes from the singer.

She did not disappoint. When you go to hear a singer from your past, you NEED to hear the hits. I always get a little irritated with singers who don’t understand that concept. Tiffany gets it and proved she can still belt out those hits. I mean there were grown women at the end of the bar who squealed with every song from the past she sang. Okay, so maybe I did too…Judgy McJudgerson.

We walked in the door to “All This Time.” I LOVE THAT SONG! “All this time. All and all I know regrets. The sun still shines. The sun still sets. And my heart forgives. The heart forgets. But what will I do now with all this time.”  And she followed it up with “Could’ve Been.” How can you forget the angst of your tween years? “Could’ve been so beautiful. Could’ve been so right. Could’ve been my lover every day of my life. Could’ve been so beautiful. Could’ve been so right. I’ll never hold what could’ve been on a cold and lonely night.” *tear*

Did you know Tiffany actually moved to Nashville to be a country singer at age 10, but they told her she was too young? She promptly moved to L.A. and by 14 years of age was a phenomenon. However, now Tiffany is back to write and sing new music with a country flavor. We were lucky to hear some of it that night.

Her voice is still solid and has a cool folk/country/rock feel to it. I adored quite a few of the new songs. There were two songs in particular I especially attached to immediately. Tiffany sang the first song with Tommy Wright. It’s called “Maybe.” This one questions our romantic selections with “Maybe they’re right. Maybe you’re wrong for me. Maybe my heart’s so blind to love this time I just can’t see.”

The second tune embraces who each of us are…faults and all. It’s called “I’m Just That Girl.” I know I can relate…”I’m just that girl who never seems to get anything right. Some days I laugh about it. Some days it makes me cry…”

She finished out the show with two songs that we all know (and most of us love). I think you can guess what they are. First there was “I Saw Him Standing There.” I’ll admit I got my dance on for that one.

Then she ended with the iconic tune “I Think We’re Alone Now.” However, before Tiffany started to sing, she explained it was going to be a little different than we were used to hearing the tune. Macey and I immediately looked at each other with raised eyebrows. I’m gonna admit…I don’t like it when people change songs I’ve grown to love. It’s kind of like they are altering history. Therefore, I was skeptical. In fact, I’ll admit I was pretty stubborn when the song began. Do you know what else I was? Wrong.

The new version is incredible and you can hear it HERE. As soon as Tiffany started singing the first verse, Macey and I were again looking at each other with smiles. It. Was. Awesome. It will be out to radio in a few months as well. Kudos go to Chris Roberts for the idea and for producing the new version. Chris, you are awesome and you were right. PLUS, Chris can sing like many singers only WISH they knew how to sing. Check out Chris with One Flew South HERE. Those guys are incredible!

That night also allowed me to hear another great artist by the name of Lindsay Lawler. This woman has some sass and she is all great old-school country sounding music. Her voice is cool, raspy and textured. Her songs travel the emotional gamut.

I’ll give you two examples of great tunes by Lindsay. First up is the tortured looking for love song called “Spin the Bottle.” Lindsay know exactly where to take the song vocally with loneliness surrounding each word. “So I spin the bottle not knowing where I will land. Yeah, I spin the bottle to see where we stand. I don’t care if you hold me…if we just sit and talk. I don’t care if you’re there when I wake up. I don’t care if it’s wrong or it’s right. I wanna let go of lonely tonight.”

The singer then rolls into high gear with the song “Train Wreck.” It is fast and fun with a whole lot of country in every word. “That girl’s a train wreck. Whiskey on her breath. Tangled hair aint gone to bed yet. Rip in her hose. Last night’s clothes. Still smells like cigarette smoke. Broken heel. One earring left. Where the other one’s at is anyone’s guess. Last night’s fun is the next day’s mess. That girl’s a train wreck.”

Go listen to Lindsay’s music y’all! I cannot wait to hear a full show from this woman. Plus, she is extremely fun. That is always a bonus. Carry on Lindsay. Carry on.

SUCCESS IS “HOPEFUL”…That is why on Monday we attended the “City of Hope” Celebrity Softball challenge here in Nashville. It is the unofficial kick off to CMA Fan Fest and Monday provided a perfect night for the game. It wasn’t 150 degrees. There was no rain. AND flooding wasn’t an issue. To tell you the truth, it was great to be back at the ballpark.

This game is played by some of the biggest stars in Nashville and raises money for “City of Hope” which is “a leading research and treatment center for cancer, diabetes and other life-threatening diseases.”

Thanks to Mark, we got to go enjoy a night at Greer Stadium watching this charity game. It was a whole lot of fun. I found somebody’s video of the game on YouTube HERE.

Some of high points and observations…

1. Jason Aldean can play some softball! I know it’s a charity game, but DANG. He has obviously been on a field before that night.

2. Butter from the Trailer Choir slid into home plate for a home run early in the game. That drew the most cheers of the night.

3. It was fun to watch the truly competitive nature come out of many of the artists and athletes. With the “After MidNite with Blair Garner” team down by many runs late in the game, the focus changed. All of the sudden, the guys were playing more and runs were coming in droves. The game was tied up and the organizers were going to end play. However, that was NOT going to happen. The celebrities begged for another inning and a winner was determined (the “After MidNite” team). The competition made me laugh. I LOVE IT! This is why these people are so good at what they do. They like to win…and I like that.

4. Carrie Underwood was given a surprise wedding shower with funny gifts from everyone.

5. Artists stayed after the game to take pictures and sign autographs for fans which is always impressive.

SUCCESS IS BENEFICIAL…It was off to Storme Warren’s Nashville Navy Show at Limelight on Tuesday night. With numerous hit songwriters on the bill as well as up-and-comers, the night was bound to be fun.

It was great to see Fotojo, Lori and Jaime who I haven’t seen in a while. They all rock my face off and did a wonderful job putting the show together!

There were three rounds that night and due to the numerous songs and people, I am only going to mention a song or two from each as well as one word that describes each of them. This should be interesting. Here. We. Go.

Shane Thomas music is real. The song that made me listen was “Somewhere Between John Wayne and John 3:16.” It was a lyrically cool way to describe a good ‘ol boy.

Shannon Mock music is refreshing. The song that made me listen was “You Took Me With You.” This tune was all about the happiness real love provides.

Tony Bridges music is warm. The song that made me listen was “Lost.” This tune was all about love and it’s saving ways. “Lost. I was lost . I was bound to live my life walkin’ in my sleep. Then you came along and your love rescued me.”

Aly Cutter music is loyal. The song that made me listen was “I Like the Way It Feels.” It’s about real love and the hook says it all. “I don’t love you because I have to. I love you because I like the way it feels.”

David St. Romain music is deep (in voice and meaning). The song that made me listen to the Nashville Star alum was “Some People Touch So Many Lives.” It is about the importance of making a difference in the world. “Some people don’t care about anyone…anything. They never take the time. But some people touch so many lives.”

Joanna Smith music is witty. The song that made me listen was “Gettin’ Married.” There is humor scattered throughout this tune. “I’m not ready for a new last name. I don’t want to be nobody’s ball and chain…the reason for his Friday night poker game. I don’t wanna be another Desperate Housewife. Doin dirty laundry on a Saturday night. I don’t wanna be somebody’s baby. Bring me another Bud Light.”

Danielle Peck music is honest. You probably know a few of this woman’s songs. The new song that made me listen was “Fly Back to Me” which had a Norah Jones feel to it. It was a completely different side of the singer and I really liked the tune.  The song that has made me listen to Danielle for the past few years is a tune called “Findin’ a Good Man.” Most women can relate to this one. “Here’s to the liars and the cheaters and the cold mistreaters. To the Mamma’s boys who can’t make a stand. Here’s to the superficial players the ‘I love you’ too-soon sayers. If you hear me girls raise your hand. Let’s have a toast. Here’s to findin a good man.”

Jaime Fox music is sassy (in the great way country music is meant to be). The song that made me listen was “I’m Talkin’ ‘Bout the Truth.” This one got stuck in my head three days later (which is always a good sign). “I’m talkin’ ’bout the truth. I’m talkin’ ’bout the elephant in the room. I’m talkin’ ’bout the whos and the whats and the where you beens. I wanna hear somethin’ that makes some sense from you. I’m talkin’ ’bout the truth.”

This is when we get into the third round of the night. These guys have NUMEROUS songs you’ve heard and love.  It’s a little impossible to list just one. Okay, it’s a lot impossible. Therefore, I’m bending the rules for this round.

Keith Anderson has a way with the songs he sings and the crowds he entertains. It’s actually pretty impressive to watch and hear. Even though I was hoping for a new song that night, Keith did what the crowd wanted and that was to hear all of his great hits. Rule for all artists…ALWAYS do what the crowd wants. It will pay off in the end.

“I Still Miss You” still gives me goose bumps whether the guitar or the piano leads me into the first verse. “Lost In This Moment” makes me want to feel what that brides has to be feeling when she looks into the eyes of her man. “Pickin’ Wild Flowers” makes me feel…Oh come on! Like I need to explain that song. I will say the crowd loves that tune and was quick to sing back to Keith…”…iced down a six-pack.”

It’s always a pleasure Mr. Anderson.

Trent Willmon was next up in the round. Trent sings one of my very favorite songs on the planet. I think you might know it. It’s called “On Again Tonight.” If you haven’t heard it…GO LISTEN!

On Tuesday night, Trent sang some new stuff and we got to see how amazing he is with the lyrics. The guy can make you laugh ’til you cry with songs like “I Wish You Were Beer.” No lie. This one is a classic country hit waiting to happen. “Wish you were beer. Somethin’ nice to hold. Lord, I wish that you’d get better when you get ice cold.” BAHAHAHAHA!

Trent can also deliver heart-warming tunes. That night the song was delivered in the form of “Daddies and Daughters.” I can 100% relate to this one. “Daddies and daughters have somethin’ no one else does. You need a special kind of love. It’s hard to explain. A man as tough as leather can turn to velvet when he smiles. As worlds apart as they may seem. There’s nothin’ like the love between Daddies and daughters.” Amen, Trent and well said.

Third in the round was the great Wade Hayes. He’s been singing great songs for years and I always love to hear him deliver them to a live audience. I forget how much I love some of Wade’s songs until he begins to sing. This was the case on Tuesday night when he started to play “The Day She Left Tulsa.” That is a well-crafted piece of art on all levels.

Wade can also get his funny on with songs like “Too Old for This Shit.” Hey! He makes some GREAT points. “‘Cause when the good times get a little too good my wild side comes out of the wood. I can’t stop the fuse once it’s been lit. I know there’s a price to pay for all the Hell and the ruckus I’ve raised. Maybe one day I’ll learn how to quit. I’m gettin’ too old for this shit.”

The last man in the round was Ray Scott. Wow. I mean. Wow. He was insightful enough to get away with calling out women for being complicated in the tune “I Love You Both.” I was okay with the explanation and I think other women will be too. “I love you both. I love the you that makes me smile just like a clown and I love the you that makes me want to cuss out loud. Then turn around and lay you down. I love you both.”

Ray also delivered the most humorous line of the night in the song “I Gotta Quit Drinkin’.” Are you ready for it? “Woke up with a dog and I think I gave her a bone. I gotta quit drinkin’.” HAHAHAHAHAHA!

There was a really cool singer by the name of Ted Vigil who covers John Denver…AND looks just like him. While he was singing that night, everyone was starting to dance….

Jeff Bates closed out the night with a great full-band show. I was supposed to be headed back to the office, but I couldn’t leave when he started singing. Jeff has one of those all-encompassing voices that is warm country. The voice itself embraces you while he’s onstage.

He also has a loyal fan following. One of his older fans just had hip replacement surgery and was STILL there that night. Jeff was also singing his song “Long, Slow Kisses” to another by cell phone.

My favorite of the night from Jeff was the song “Your Lovin’ Talks To Me.” It was extremely romantic AND hot. “Your lovin’ talks to me. Your lovin’ walks with me. Your eyes are all I see. And THAT ended night number two of CMA Fan Fest. No disappointments.

SUCCESS IS CMT-astic…Wednesday night was spent watching the awards. Since most of you watched as well. I will only share random thoughts. AAAAAANNNNNNND GO….

- YES! I love this Kid Rock song!!! Ummm…is that Martina McBride and Kellie Pickler? Is Trace Adkins getting in on the action?! Nice! Randy Houser! Randy Houser! WOOO WHOOO! Bad ass number three Zack Brown makes an appearance. Jamey Johnson next up…perfect. Seriously. Jamey’s look would scare me into doing whatever he told me to do. His eyes have that “I might be crazy” look in them that is intriguing. It’s pretty awesome. OMG. The biggest bad ass of them all. That’s Hank Williams, Jr.!!!! Great way to kick off the show. However, I was a little confused with Martina and Kellie being in that mix. Anyone else?

- The CMT Awards are one of the few award shows I’ll watch for two reasons….1) They actually have a little fun and enjoy the music and 2) It’s fan voted.

- Lady Antebellum won Group Video of the Year for “Need You Now.” BIG shock. That’s me speaking the language of sarcasm. LOVE the song. LOVE the video.

- The forced humor on this award show is awful. However, T.O. just made me LOL with the singing of “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys.” HAHAHAHAHA! Great joke.

- Toby Keith, I love you. However, that short interview was awkward.

- Why is Hayden Panettiere presenting at the CMT’s and what is she wearing?

- Miranda Lambert delivers a great performance as usual with the song “White Liar.” She is generally on the money for live TV appearances. PLUS, her bass player with the mohawk is awesome!

- It’s awesome to see someone so genuinely excited to win. Luke Bryan throwing his jacket into the crowd after his Breakthrough Video of the Year win for “Do I” was very cool.

- If there is any artist on the planet I’m biased for it’s Tim McGraw. That guy can do no wrong. Carry on Tim. Carry on.

- YEAH! It’s the Trailer Choir!!!! Go Vinny, Butter and Crystal.

- Keenan Thompson as Reba is pretty entertaining. However, the real Reba just out-funnied him. It’s pretty hard to beat Reba in any competition. You know why? Cause she’s….REBA.

- Trace Adkins just made the best acceptance speech of the night with “I’m proud of my Hillbilly Bone.” HAHAHAHA!

- Danny Gokey had the best photo of the night on Twitter. It was Danny, Blake Shelton and Chuck Wicks. Hilarious. Check it out…

- David Spade was easily the funniest of the evening when he presented with Kid Rock. Check it out HERE.

- Jamey Johnson just debuted his new song “Gotta Get Back to Macon.” Pretty cool! Wait. Is that Little Big Town backing him up on vocals? REALLY cool.

- Snooki, Paula Dean and Mike “The Situation”? No comment. Wait. One comment. Mike…”They” don’t call you The Situation. YOU all you the situation. Interesting combination. I heart Paula Dean. She is just one of those people who makes you smile.

- WHOA! Cool stage performance for LeAnn Rimes performance of the “Swingin’” remake. However, it sounds nothing like the John Anderson original. Wait. Is that John Anderson playing guitar on stage?! Nice.

- I am completely infatuated with that Steel Magnolia song “Keep On Lovin’ You.” Love. It.

- “Free” is the first song from the Zack Brown band I really adore. It is cool and easy. PLUS, the cell phone lights are out in full force for this performance. Great live performance by the band as well.

- YES! Carrie is singing “Undo It.” I have loved that song since I first bought the CD. So much fun…in a get back at the guy you hate kind of way.

- KEITH URBAN AND JOHN MAYER! KEITH URBAN AND JOHN MAYER! Everyone pay attention. This is gonna be good….and it was. Those two are freaks of nature on the guitar. It is SO entertaining to watch that kind of talent. Seriously. Easily the best performance of the night.

- Kid Rock redeemed himself for any mis-steps throughout the night with his closing. Such a great way to end an awards show. Here is what he said. “As a music lover…if it looks good, you’ll see it. If it sounds good, you’ll hear it. If it’s marketed right, you’ll buy it. But if it’s real, you’ll feel it.” Well said and very true.

SUCCESS IS WRITING FROM THE HEART AND SOUL…Thursday night took me and the girls to the Hard Rock Cafe for a full night of musical bliss.

It all started with the musical styling of Jason Sever. I’ve said it once (well, more than once) and I’ll say it again. Jason is one of THE BEST singer/songwriters in the city…hands down. He’s one of those singers that you love to listen to so much, you almost hope no one else cuts his songs. This is only because you cannot imagine someone else singing them.

Then there are the incredible songs. They are woven together in such a fantastic way, each song leaves you wanting more.

Since he’s been a featured artist before and I’ve already told you so much about him, I will only talk about a few new songs I heard that night. Jason took a different spin on an oft-used word and made something great out of it’s meaning in the tune “Whatever.” The love song states, “Whatever she wants, I come runnin’. Whatever she needs, I give her every part of me. Whatever she says. Call me crazy, but maybe this could be the best thing that ever…whatever.”

The song “Come Back to Me” ponders lost love when in the most lonely of times. “I know we both said goodbye, but there comes a time you cross my mind and I know I’m crossin’ your mind too. I know we wanna move on, but if it gets too lonely you can always come back to me.”

The last song was a well-crafted tune about regrets. This one was called “Better Hands.” The chorus says it all. “Better hands then mine are holding her now. I was only gonna keep her down. If you could see her dreams, the love in her eyes. I guess he gave her wings and he let her fly. I love her so much, I let her go and it’s killing me inside. She’s in better hands then mine.”

Go listen to Jason’s music. I always go back to hear great songs from an incredible artist. He’s one of those singer/songwriters who has a long career ahead of him.

And then there was the Kenny Chesney Tribute…and it was amazing. The show was two rounds full of some of Kenny’s biggest songwriters and all proceeds went to one of my favorite charities on the planet…Musicians On Call. Katy Brown does an excellent job with this charity and they are doing some amazing things around the city. If you can, donate your time or money to such a wonderful charity.
